George Mason University wanted a way to say, "Thank you."

The school's location -- primarily in Fairfax, Virginia, but also with satellite campuses in Arlington and Prince William County in Northern Virginia -- meant that many of its students and staff members were affected by the September 11 attacks on the Pentagon in a personal way.

So George Mason, whose athletics teams are dubbed the "Patriots," held "Be a Patriot" night last month at a men's and women's basketball doubleheader.

The event honored those who had helped in the Pentagon relief effort in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, from police officers and firefighters to military service personnel and medical employees. In all, citizens representing 34 different agencies attended, as did area elementary-school students and their families, who helped the school say thank you.

The event also was a benefit for the families of victims at the Pentagon.

"Our George Mason family and student-athletes continue to be deeply moved by the efforts of our local community during the tragic events at the Pentagon," said Tom O'Conner, George Mason assistant vice-president and athletics director. "We will provide collection services for our appropriate charity, the American Red Cross National Capital chapter, during the games (this season) as well as find ways we as an organization and as individuals can continue to contribute throughout the season."

The ceremony recognizing the community's involvement in the Pentagon relief effort took place at halftime of the men's game. After the men's game, a unique post-game autograph session matched children -- accompanied by George Mason student-athlete representatives -- with many of the rescue and relief "heroes," who signed mementos for the children.

Perhaps fittingly, the entire event took place in the Patriot Center, George Mason's home arena, and both George Mason teams were victorious.
