What do women in sport look like? That's a question Jane Gottesman, a former San Francisco Chronicle reporter, set out to answer.

Her experiences as a sports journalist in the early 1990s led to a realization that newspapers and magazines rarely featured women in sport as competitors. So Gottesman, along with photographer Geoffrey Biddle, embarked on the journey that has become "Game Face: What Does A Female Athlete Look Like?"

"Game Face" is both a book published by Random House and an exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution's Arts and Industries Building in Washington D.C.

The exhibit features 139 of the 182 color and black and white photographs in the book, and it will run until January of next year. The exhibit will then travel to Salt Lake City in time for the Winter Olympics. A five-year national tour will follow.

Included are works by photographers Ansel Adams, Annie Leibovitz and Dorothea Lange, among others. The photos show women and girls celebrating, competing, enjoying and living sport. They include girls and women of all ages, races, sports and body types.
