Rochester Institute of Technology's bid for an unbeaten national championship season ended March 17 with the Tigers falling to Plattsburgh State, 6-2, in the Division III Men's Ice Hockey Championship final at Ritter Memorial Arena in Rochester.

Plattsburgh State jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first 7:33 of the contest on goals by Rob Retter and Mark Coletta. Retter tallied on a feed from Jason Kilcan, beating Rochester Institute of Technology goalie Tyler Euverman high to the stick side at the 5:57 mark of the first period.

The Cardinals doubled their lead just 1:36 later, when Colletta found the back of the net off of a centering pass from Chad Kemp.

"We wanted to get the puck in deep and cycle it, and forecheck," said Plattsburgh State coach Bob Emery. "Our biggest fear was that RIT would come out like they did in the semifinals (the Tigers jumped to an early 3-0 lead against Wisconsin-River Falls) but we were able to weather the early storm."

The Tigers got some life when Derek Hahn tallied on a power play at 13:10, assisted by Jerry Galway and Peter Bournazakis.

Plattsburgh State took control of the game with second-period goals by Brendon Hodge and Rob Retter, with Retter's just 17 seconds away from the intermission.

Rochester Institute of Technology missed an opportunity at the end of the second period when Mike Bournazakis found the back of the net, but the goal was waved off because it came after the period-ending horn.

"That late goal really hurt," said Tigers head coach Wayne Wilson. "Then we were just a second away from making it 4-2."

Plattsburgh State sandwiched goals from Brent Armstrong and Hodge around a Mike Tarantino goal for the Tigers to make the final score 6-2.

"I guess the fairy tale didn't end the way we wanted it to," said Wilson. "It's been an unbelievable year. In a single-game elimination like this, these things happen. Plattsburgh is extremely talented and they played very well."

"In our minds we are still champions," said Rochester Institute of Technology senior forward John Day. "We only lost one game all year, and it was the wrong one."

Plattsburgh State ended the year 29-5, winning its second national championship under Emery.

"This might not be the most talented team I've had, but they have the biggest hearts," said Emery.
