Softball championship turns bittersweet for Muskingum
Lady Muskies battle past assistant coach's death to maintain record winning streak

In looking at box scores from the Division III Women's Softball Championship, it might seem that Muskingum cruised to its first national championship undefeated and unscathed. The statistics don't mention, however, that en route to their 34th straight win and the 4-1 victory over Central (Iowa) for the title May 20, the Lady Muskies were dealing with a loss.

Assistant coach John Wells collapsed during warm-ups May 18 and was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Despite the tragedy, tournament games continued as scheduled, while Muskingum went on to top the previous Division III record for consecutive wins (33). The Muskies finished the season 47-6.

"It feels great to win the national championship," said an emotionally drained Muskingum coach Donna Newberry. "It's kind of a weird day because it's not without mixed emotions. I don't know if any of us right now are able to experience the full joy of what a national championship brings because it is tempered with so many emotions.

"I think in a week or two -- or a year or two -- when we reflect back, it will become one of those things that can never be taken away."

The championship game was scoreless until Muskingum's Shelli Manson and Jennifer Shay hit back-to-back home runs, giving the Muskies a 3-0 advantage. Central scored its only run of the game in the fifth inning when pinch hitter Emily Carlson hit a sacrifice fly. Mandy Carnes' double drove in a run to give the Muskies a three-run lead again in the bottom of the fifth.

Dani Keiffer pitched all 28 innings of Muskingum's tournament games. She allowed just two runs during the tournament, and Central scored the only earned run.

Muskingum advanced to the championship game by sending then-undefeated Central into the loser's bracket. The Dutch then ousted Wheaton (Massachusetts) from the bracket to force a rematch with the Lady Muskies.

Central, which finished the season 41-10, placed Annie Van Wetzinga, Molly Parrott and Libby Hysell on the all-tournament team, while Keiffer was joined by teammates Carla Kampschmidt, Julie Ryan and Jennifer Shay. Rachael Powers and Carmella Ranieri of Wheaton, Jennifer Meyer and Jackie Huegel of St. Mary's, Roanoke's Amy Layman, William Paterson's Katie Morris and North Central's Betsy Dwyer also were honored.
