The Division III Men's Ice Hockey Committee voted to recommend expansion for its championship at its annual meeting June 5-8 in Indianapolis.

The group will forward a recommendation to the Division III Championships Committee requesting that the championship be expanded from its current eight-team bracket. The committee proposed two options for the expansion, the first of which is a nine-team bracket, with four teams from the West Region and five teams from the East Region. A second option would include four teams from the West and six teams from the East.

Additionally, the committee will submit a proposal to increase the travel party from 26 to 29 and the squad size from 21 to 23. The committee believes that the number of student-athletes currently allowed does not provide for an effective contest, nor does it provide an adequate number of individuals needed to perform game functions.

The committee also discussed officiating issues and voted that officials must work a minimum of 10 games during the current season in Division III men's ice hockey in the two-referee, one-linesman system.

The committee indicated that it was impressed with the professionalism and demeanor of all of the officials during the 2001 championship tournament.

In other actions, the committee:

Reviewed the selection criteria and voted to contact the competing institutions immediately after the selection call in order to allow teams to make travel arrangements more quickly.

Decided to contact all Division III men's ice hockey institutions in the West region to gauge interest in having a predetermined site in that region.

Recognized Scott Nichols, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, whose term as chair ends September 1, for his contributions.
