Methodist College continued its dominance of the fledgling Division III Women's Golf Championships, winning the team title by 50 shots May 15-18 at the Hickory Point Golf Club in Forsyth, Illinois. The Monarchs claimed their fourth consecutive NCAA title. Methodist won the last two combined Division II and III championships and last year's inaugural Division III event.

The Monarchs broke their own team scoring record, shattering last season's total by 71 strokes. Methodist fired a four-round total of 1,214 to win the title. Concordia-Moorhead took second, but did post the tournament's low team round with a 296 on the third day. Rhodes was third, six shots behind Concordia-Moorhead. Mary Hardin-Baylor and Franklin rounded out the top five.

Methodist senior Carol Brogan won the individual title, holding off teammate Melanie Tipps by three strokes. Brogan finished with a six-over-par, 294 total and fired a final-round 74. Methodist did not have a golfer finish lower than 17th.

Brogan's efforts also set the Division III tournament mark for low score. Teammate Stacy Smith shot a four-round total of 316 to win last year's tournament.

With the win, Methodist fulfilled its goal and kept its national title streak alive.

"This is what we came here do to, to win the national championship," Brogan said.

The astounding margin of victory stems from a team that has tough competition just for the right to play on the team.

"The competition within our team is intense -- we have 30 girls who want to play for us and only five can go at a time," said Methodist coach Kim Kincer. "They all have to really stay sharp just to stay on the team. That keeps everyone focused."
