Traditionally, the Division I and Division III Women's Lacrosse Championships have been held at the same site. That may soon change now that both divisions have recommended separate predetermined sites beginning in 2002.

Meeting June 5-8 in Teton Village, Wyoming, the Division III Women's Lacrosse Committee began planning for a possible separation from the Division I venue by launching an initial search for potential host sites for 2002 and 2003.

The decision to separate was based in part on difficulty in securing sites that were willing and able to host simultaneous championships, and the increased missed class time for student-athletes.

Under the proposal, Division I and Division III would hold their championships at separate locations but during the same weekend. With each division striving to create a unique identity within the lacrosse championships, Division III decided to keep its traditional Saturday-Sunday playing schedule, with the banquet now scheduled for Friday night, thus decreasing the missed class time to one day. The Division III semifinals will be held at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2002, with the championship game at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 19.

The committee also reviewed automatic qualification for the 2002 championship and recommended the following conferences be approved by the Division III Championships Committee: Centennial Conference, Empire 8, Middle Atlantic Conference, New England Small College Athletic Conference, New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance, New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference, North Coast Athletic Conference, Old Dominion Athletic Conference, Pennsylvania Athletic Conference, State University of New York Athletic Conference and Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association.

In other actions, the committee voted to move the national ranking call and publication of rankings from Tuesday to Wednesday in order to allow more time for the regional advisory committees to collect score reporting forms and conduct regional ranking calls.

The committee also began investigating the possibility of an increase in officials' fees due to officials in some regions receiving higher fees for regular-season contests than for the NCAA championship.
