GREENCASTLE, Indiana -- Williams and UC Santa Cruz met for an East vs. West final May 20 at the Division III Men's Tennis Championships on the DePauw campus, and the East emerged victorious. The Williams Ephs won, 4-1, over the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs to claim their second championship to go along with a 1999 crown.

The championship match saw the Banana Slugs come out strong to claim the doubles point behind wins from Derek Fitzpatrick and Nick Cunningham at No. 1 doubles and Danny Kim and Peter Gladkin at the No. 2 spot. With a one-point deficit, the Ephs entered the singles competition needing to gain ground.

Daniel Murray notched the first point for Williams with a 6-3, 6-0 win over UC Santa Cruz's Carlos Gonzalez. Josh Lefkowitz followed suit with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Fitzpatrick at No. 1 singles, and Andrew Murray made it 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Kim.

The deciding match came at No. 4 singles, where Toby Reigeluth topped Gladkin, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3 in the tiebreaker).

"Our kids are just tough in singles play. We knew that Santa Cruz plays good doubles, but we also knew how tough we are in singles," Ephs coach dave Johnson said.

"This is an incredible accomplishment for our program."

Williams defeated Washington (Maryland) and Redlands to earn the finals bid. UC Santa Cruz downed MIT and Gustavus Adolphus to earn its 10th championship appearance.

In the third-place match, Redlands defeated Gustavus Adolphus, 4-3, after winning three matches that went three sets.

The singles championship saw UC Santa Cruz's Fitzpatrick play his way through a tough tournament field to face Gustavus Adolphus' Eric Butorac in the finals. Fitzpatrick dominated that match, 6-3, 6-2, to win the singles title.

The senior collected more hardware later in the day when he and Cunningham met Sloan Rush and Ed Rahn from Trinity (Texas) in the doubles final. The Trinity duo's power was countered by the UC Santa Cruz pair's finesse and mobility. The Banana Slugs took the match, 6-2, 6-3. Fitzpatrick's feat was only the sixth time in Division III men's tennis history that the singles champion also won the doubles title.
