Williams won its first Division III Women's Tennis Championships crown with a 6-3 win over defending champion and host Trinity (Texas) May 20.

The Ephs claimed the title just hours after the Williams men's team won its second title. It's the second straight year one school has claimed both the men's and women's titles [Trinity (Texas) did it last year].

The key to the Ephs' success was two wins in the doubles portion of the match. Caroline Wasserman and Stephanie Hall won at No. 2 doubles, while Alison Swain and Brooke Gibson won at No. 3. The Tigers' Lizzie Yasser and Abbe Ulrich grabbed a point for their squad at the No. 1 spot.

The first four singles matches split, which kept Trinity one point behind. Then the Ephs' Julie Mallory downed Laura Cumming, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, to give Williams the championship. The Tigers defaulted the last match for a 6-3 finish.

"These girls are unbelievable," Williams coach Julie Greenwood said. "We're in the middle of exams, fighting sleep, playing Trinity on its home court and we just didn't let anything distract us."

A year ago, Trinity defeated Williams in the quarterfinals in a match in which the Ephs felt they did not play their best. "We talked a lot about coming out and not being afraid. The doubles point gave us some confidence and the singles took care of themselves. We have wanted to play Trinity ever since the last match of last year. They were the inspiration for this season," Greenwood said.

In the singles competition, Methodist's Elena Blanina surged through the field to claim the individual title. Mary Ellen Gordon and Anusha Natarajan of Emory beat defending champions Sheree Schwartz and Emily Gould of Pomona-Pitzer for their school's first doubles title.
