Freshmen lead Wheaton (Massachusetts) over threshold

Wheaton (Massachusetts) was left on the doorstep of winning its first title in the Division III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a third-place finish last year and second-place efforts in 1998 and 1999.

But the Lyons bolted through the door with a burst of speed in 2001, winning by a wide margin May 24-26 at Millikin. Wheaton amassed 83 points to outdistance second-place Calvin (49) and two-time defending champion Lincoln (Pennsylvania) (47).

"The women had outstanding performances from day one and I can't say how proud I am of their efforts," said Wheaton head coach Paul Souza.

The Lyons had only one individual winner, but more than made up for the lack of champions with several athletes placing in multiple events. Freshman Amber James was Wheaton's first-place finisher, edging 1999 and 2000 winner Megan Pierce of Calvin in the 400-meter dash by two-hundredths of a second.

"Our freshmen entered the national championship and performed incredibly," Souza said. "For Amber to dethrone Pierce as a freshman certainly bodes well for the future and the career she is going to have."

James added a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash, anchored the Lyons' 400-meter relay team to victory and ran a leg of the second-place 1,600-meter relay. Kim Jones, another freshman, placed second in both the 100-meter dash and long jump for Wheaton, and joined her classmate on the 400 relay unit.

Shimera Daniels and Tenille Johnson also were multiple place-winners. Daniels came in second in the triple jump, fourth in the 100 dash and fifth in the long jump. Johnson was second in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles and fifth in the 100-meter high hurdles. They also were members of the winning 400 relay team.

Lindsay Mulder led Calvin by winning the long jump with a meet-record effort of 20 feet, 1 inch, placing seventh in the 400 dash, and running a leg on the Knights' victorious 1,600-meter relay group. The second-place team finish was the best in Calvin's history.

Rhondale Jones had a record-setting performance for Lincoln. Jones won the 100- and 200-meter dashes, and the 100 hurdles, for the third consecutive year. Her nine individual championships is an NCAA record for all divisions, covering both indoor and outdoor track and field.

Keene State's Mary Proulx also was a multiple champion after winning the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs.

Meet records also were set by Eastern Mennonite's Laura Rosenberger in the pole vault and Wartburg's Dia Dohlman in the javelin throw. Rosenberger cleared 12 feet to add one-quarter inch to her previous mark. Dohlman's winning throw covered 152 feet, 2 inches.
