Three individual wins in field events proved decisive in lifting Wisconsin-La Crosse to victory in the Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 24-26 at Millikin.

The Eagles totaled 80 points to defeat second-place Lincoln (Pennsylvania) by 20. Wisconsin-La Crosse pulled into a tie with Lincoln for the most team titles in the championships' history with six.

It also marks the sixth time that the Eagles have won both the indoor and outdoor titles in the same season, as they also accomplished the feat in 1988, 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1997.

Head coach Mark Guthrie has directed the Wisconsin-La Crosse program in all six seasons in which it has swept both the indoor and outdoor honors. "We had 23 athletes entered in the meet and it was really a combination of our front points and depth," said Guthrie. "We really stay focused throughout the meet, both mentally and physically.

"We had to be prepared to compete in every race or event for three days."

Hans Schmidt won the pole vault, Jim Nelson the shot put and Mike Koenning the hammer throw for Wisconsin-La Crosse, which also captured the Division III indoor track and field crown in March. Justin Jarmon scored the lone points in the field events for Lincoln with a second-place finish in the triple jump.

Wisconsin-La Crosse received four second-place performances from its track athletes. Andrew Rock (400-meter dash), Ross Substad (3,000-meter steeplechase) and Derek Walgrave (110-meter high hurdles) each claimed runner-up status in their events.

Rock also was a member of the Eagles' 400-meter relay unit that placed second.

Chaz Clemons and Chris Cobbs were individual winners for Lincoln. Clemons won the 100-meter dash for the second straight year and Cobbs earned his third consecutive title in the 110-meter high hurdles.

The Lions also were first in the 400-meter relay, with Clemons running the anchor leg following Derrick Freeman, John Ritch and Darnell Johnson.

Clemons and Cobbs were the only competitors to repeat their 2000 victories in the same event. Raheim Greenridge of Wheaton (Massachusetts) was this year's triple jump champion after winning the high jump in 2000.
