After 19 years away from the winner's stand, La Verne once again staked its claim as the top team in Division III women's volleyball. The Leopards handed the host Wisconsin-Whitewater Lady Warhawks their second runner-up finish in two years, as a capacity crowd of 1,692 witnessed a five-game marathon with La Verne ending up the 22-30, 33-31, 16-30, 30-26, 15-12 victor and national champion.

Playing without starting outside hitter Amy Smith, who suffered a knee injury in the semifinal against Juniata, the Leopards rebounded from a first-game loss to even the match at one game apiece. The squad then suffered a setback in the third game, losing, 30-16.

By increasing its hitting efficiency in the fourth game and holding Wisconsin-Whitewater to a .145 hitting percentage, the team claimed the 30-26 win and forced a deciding fifth game.

Just three points decided the champion, with La Verne winning, 15-12.

Leopards setter Ryan Winn had a variety of hitting options with Amy Kratochvil, Stacey Lupu, Adriana Contreras, Jennifer Stout and Adele Jones all registering double-digit kills. The team also produced an impressive defensive effort with 144 total team digs.

Wisconsin-Whitewater held its own on the defensive end with 124 team digs, 32 of which came from Angie Wildish. Three Warhawks players carried the offense, with Melinda Erickson, Wildish and Allison Erickson accumulating 20, 24 and 14 kills, respectively. Setter Kristy Dettman dished out 54 assists on the night.

The five-game effort was the second in two days for La Verne. The team had defeated Juniata, 27-30, 30-28, 30-17, 24-30, 15-8, in the semifinals for the right to play in the championship. Wisconsin-Whitewater downed Wellesley, 30-19, 30-18, 30-19, to earn the other finals berth.

Named to the all-tournament team were Winn, Kratochvil and Lupu of La Verne, Allison Erickson and Melinda Erickson of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Juniata's Niki Mueller.
