The athletics department staff at Wisconsin-La Crosse undoubtedly will encourage the folks at Augustana (Illinois) to host the Division III Men's Cross Country Championships more often.

Wisconsin-La Crosse won its second title, both coming at Augustana, as three Eagles finished in the top 11 November 17. The Eagles, who were first victorious in 1996, posted a team score of 80 points for a comfortable 60-point margin over second-place Calvin.

A trio of Wisconsin-La Crosse seniors concluded their collegiate careers in fine fashion. Tyler Foos was third for the Eagles, covering the 8,000-meter layout at Highland Springs Golf Course in 24 minutes, 22 seconds. Ross Substad placed four spots and eight seconds behind his teammate, and Jason Tomrell was 11th at 24:35.

The finishes were another progression up the results list for the Wisconsin-La Crosse seniors. Foos placed 14th last year and 22nd in 1999. Substad was 34th in 1999.

Tomrell ended in 39th place in 1999, 37th in 1998 and 62nd in 1997.

The other scorers for the Eagles were Joel Hirschboeck, 39th overall and 29th in the team scoring, and P. J. Lantzy, 31st among team scorers and 41st overall.

Justin Pfruender and Brian Maat led Calvin, as the Knights fell only one position shy of repeating as team champion. Pfruender came in sixth this year after placing 14th in Calvin's winning effort last year. Maat was the top freshman finisher in the championships in the 11th position.

Haverford senior J. B. Haglund became the Fords' second individual champion in the championships' history. Haglund and runner-up David Juliano of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps had identical times throughout the first half of the race, before Haglund opened up an eight-second advantage with just under 1,500 meters remaining.

Juliano closed the margin down the stretch, but Haglund crossed the finish line with a time of 24 minutes, 16 seconds, three seconds faster than Juliano and six seconds ahead of Foos.

Nebraska Wesleyan placed third in the team standings, its best
finish in 11 appearances in the championships. North Central was fourth for its 28th top-four effort in the 29 years the event has been contested.
