Wisconsin-Eau Claire's men's golf team claimed the school's first championship in any sport, holding off Guilford by one shot to take the Division III Men's Golf Championships team title May 7-10 at Persimmon Woods Golf Course in Weldon Springs, Missouri.

The Blugolds led the first two rounds of the 72-hole tournament before falling one stroke behind Guilford after three rounds. Wisconsin-Eau Claire was balanced, with no golfer lower than 27th.

Wisconsin-Eau Claire is only the fourth school outside of California or North Carolina to win an NCAA Division III golf title in the 27-year history of the event. The Blugolds' previous best finish was fourth in 1999.

Wisconsin-Eau Claire junior Ryan Quinn tied for fourth in the individual standings with a three-over-par 287. Sophomore Andy Smith and senior Ryan Kuhl had the team's best final rounds. Smith shot an even-par 71 and Kuhl fired a 72. Kuhl placed 12th overall with an eight-over-par 292, while Smith tied for 20th with a 298. Senior Todd Samarzia shot a final-round 74 and tied for 14th with a 10-over-par 294. Senior Brian Thompson had a 78 on his final 18 holes and tied for 27th with a 300.

Individual medalist honors went to Chad Collins of Methodist. Collins carded a four-round total of 281, three under par. The Methodist senior also won championships in 1998 and 1999. Allegheny's Nathan Smith finished second with a one-under 283 and Andrew Biggadike of Guilford was third with a 285 total.

Guilford placed second in the team competition after leading going into the final round. Methodist was third, followed by Otterbein. Gustavus Adolphus and Greensboro tied for fifth place.
