The Division II Women's Golf Committee discussed the addition of regional play for the 2002 tournament at its annual meeting June 25-28 in Monterey, California.

The committee talked at length about adding a regional system. The group forwarded a recommendation to the Division II Championships Committee that would create four regions -- North, East, South and West. The regionals, if approved, would be held May 2-6 (any two days) in a 36-hole format.

The group also discussed making a recommendation to expand the tournament. The current field includes 48 golfers at the championship site. The committee, looking to the future, would like to examine ways to add numbers as the sport grows at the Division II level.

In other actions, the committee evaluated and supported a proposed Division II sports festival in 2004. The group also discussed sites for the 2003 tournament and will submit its recommendations to the Division II Championships Committee for approval.

The committee also confirmed that Golfstat will continue to provide results and scoring for championships and information to assist in selection.

In addition, the group noted that bids are being accepted for the proposed 2002 regional tournaments. Interested parties should contact Kristin W. Fasbender, NCAA assistant director of championships, at 317/917-6222.
