UC San Diego is loving life in Division II, at least on the women's soccer pitch. The Tritons won their second straight Division II Women's Soccer Championship just two years after moving up from Division III.

After vanquishing Northern Kentucky last year in their Division II title debut, the Tritons blanked Christian Brothers this year, 2-0, winning the title December 2 before a crowd of 1,645 at UC San Diego. Tritons coach Brian McManus claimed his seventh national title overall and third straight, including the 1999 Division III crown.

Senior midfielder Elizabeth Hughes and sophomore forward Kristin Jones scored in the second half against Christian Brothers, which entered the game as the most prolific scoring team in NCAA history with an all-time record of 166 goals in 22 games.

Jones, who was named the most outstanding offensive player of the tournament, sealed the outcome when she took a pass from Megan Mendoza and outran a Christian Brothers defender to score in the 78th minute.

Jessica Cordova, a senior defender who held Christian Brothers star Missy Gregg scoreless for the first time in 22 games, was named the most outstanding defensive player. Gregg had scored three goals in Christian Brothers' 4-1 semifinal win over Franklin Pierce.

"When you play a team like this, with the record they have, averaging about six goals per game, you just have to see where the chips fall and you need a bit of luck," said McManus, whose team recorded its third shutout in four tournament games.

UC San Diego sophomore goalkeeper Kami Poma recorded her ninth shutout of the season.

The Tritons advanced to the title game with a 3-2 win over Northern Kentucky in a rematch of last year's championship contest.

UC San Diego's Ericka Alfredson, Jones, Hughes, Mendoza and Cordova all were named to the all-tournament team, as were Gregg, Kanae Haneishi, Veronica Botold and Margaret Saurin from Christian Brothers.
