Six new members fill Division II Council slots

The Division II Presidents Council has elected George J. Hagerty of Franklin Pierce College as a new member and has ratified the election of five new members of the Division II Management Council.

The new Management Council members are Robertha Abney, senior woman administrator, Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania (at large); Sunday Adesuyi, faculty athletics representative, St. Paul's College (at large); Paul H. Engelmann, faculty athletics representative, Central Missouri State University (Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association); Mary White, faculty athletics representative, Lees-McRae College (Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference); and Sue Willey, senior woman administrator, University of Indianapolis (Great Lakes Valley Conference).

All appointments will be effective at the conclusion of the 2002 Convention.

Hagerty

Hagerty became the third president of Franklin Pierce in 1995.

Under his leadership, the institution has experienced record enrollment and retention and has been recognized by national media outlets as a college of excellence. He also brought about the institution's master in business administration program, the first graduate program in Franklin Pierce history.

Hagerty also is no stranger to the classroom, having served as a lecturer at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education and as an associate professor of political science at Stonehill College. He also served as director of government relations; director of corporate, foundation and government relations; and director of academic development at Stonehill. He also has served both Democratic and Republican administrations in guiding education and financial policy, with special emphasis on issues of school reform and its impact on special-needs populations.

Before accepting the presidency at Franklin Pierce, Hagerty served as corporate vice-president of TCI/
Taylor, Hagerty and Associates in Washington, D.C., a legislative counseling firm for higher education institutions.

He received his B.A. in international studies at Stonehill and his M.Ed. and Ed.D in administration, planning and social policy from Harvard.

Abney

Abney is the associate athletics director and an associate professor at Slippery Rock. She has distinguished herself as an authority on minorities in leadership roles in sports.

She currently chairs the Dr. Nell Jackson Award Committee and recently completed a term on the Division II Nominating Committee.

Abney has international experience, having been selected to represent the International Council for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Dance and Sport in Beijing, China.

Abney is Slippery Rock's senior woman athletics administrator and is responsible for coordinating all athletics scheduling.

She earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education/biology from South Carolina State University and a master's in athletics administration from the University of Pittsburgh. She received her doctorate in physical education/athletics administration from the University of Iowa, where she worked in both special support services and women's athletics, assisting with event management.

Adesuyi

Adesuyi has had a successful career in higher education for more than 20 years.

He is a professor of chemistry and chairman of the department of natural science and mathematics at St. Paul's, where he has been employed since 1979. He also has served as interim provost/vice-president for academic affairs and as acting president of St. Paul's.

Adesuyi received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry from Howard University.

He also has served as president, secretary, vice-president and parliamentarian of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association; chair of the CIAA scholarship committee; and advisor to the St. Paul's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Engelmann

Paul H. Engelmann, a professor of economics and chair of the department of economics and finance at Central Missouri State, has served as his institution's faculty athletics representative since 1981.

He currently chairs the Division II Legislation Committee and has been a member of that group since 1999. He also chaired the Division II Legislative Review Subcommittee from 1997 to 1999.

Engelmann was parliamentarian for the Division II Convention business sessions from 1993 to 1998 and served as parliamentarian for the general business session in 1997.

He has been active in the Faculty Athletics Representatives Association, serving on its executive committee from 1994 to 1996, on its legislative review committee from 1990 to 1993 and as conference liaison from 1992 to the present.

Engelmann also served as president of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association from 1995 to 1997 and vice-president from 1993 to 1995.

He earned his bachelor's degree from Drury University in business administration and economics. He also holds a Ph.D. in economics from Oklahoma State University.

White

Mary White, faculty athletics representative at Lees-McRae, has been an educator for 33 years.

She is an associate professor of English at Lees-McRae, where she has taught for 23 years.

White currently serves as a member of the Division II Nominating Committee.

She was raised in New York and educated at Queens College (New York) and the City University of New York, Hofstra University and Bucknell University.

Willey

Willey is in her 15th year as associate director of athletics at Indianapolis, where she serves as the NCAA compliance coordinator. Willey also is an associate professor in the department of health and physical education.

She currently serves as the Great Lakes Valley Conference representative to the Division II Legislation Committee and also is a member of that group's Interpretations Subcommittee. Willey also is serving her second term on the GLVC Executive Committee.

Willey began her coaching career at her alma mater after graduating cum laude from Indianapolis in 1975. She earned GLVC coach of the year honors in 1989. Her 1998 squad earned all-academic team honors with the sixth-highest team grade-point average in Division II.

In all, Willey coached 23 years at Indianapolis, leading 43 teams in five sports.

Willey holds a master's and a doctorate from Indiana University, Bloomington.
