The Division II Women's Softball Committee discussed championship selection criteria during its annual meeting July 8-11 in Indianapolis.

The committee agreed on recommendations to modify the selection criteria with the intent of emphasizing regional competition and rewarding teams for having strong schedules.

The recommendations include basing the primary selection criteria on (1) in-region record in Division II, (2) in-region power rating in Division II, (3) record versus top six in the region, (4) overall Division II record, record versus Division II teams that are .500 or better and (5) overall power rating.

Secondary selection criteria would be based on (1) head-to-head competition, (2) record versus a common opponent, (3) season-ending performance and (4) overall record.

If the Division II Championships Committee approves the recommended changes to the selection criteria, they will be effective for the 2002 championship.

The committee also will forward a recommendation to the Championships Committee about the power ratings. The committee would like to use separate power ratings for in-region competition and overall.

In-region points would be as follows:

Eight points for a win against one of the top six teams in the region.

Six points for a win against an opponent ranked seventh through 10th in the region.

Five points for a win against an unranked Division II opponent.

Four points for a loss against a top-six team.

Three points for a loss against an opponent ranked seventh through 10th in the region.

The recommendation for the overall power ratings is as follows:

Eight points for a win against a top-six team in any Division II region.

Six points for a win against a team ranked seventh through 10th in any Division II region.

Five points for a loss against a top-six team in any Division II region.

Four points for a win against a Division II opponent.

Three points for a loss against a team ranked seventh through 10th in any Division II region.

The total point value divided by the number of games will calculate a team's power rating.

In other action, the committee:

Recommended to the Championships Committee that an additional official work regional competitions.

Recommended potential hosts for the 2003 finals.

Recommended a fee increase for officials and umpire-in-chiefs at championships.
