One chapter closed and another began in Division II men's tennis. Lander, winner of the last eight championships, failed to advance out of the quarterfinals and opened the door for a new champion. Rollins took advantage, and with a 5-0 win over Hawaii Pacific, Rollins captured its fourth national tennis title May 13 at West Florida's Skeeter Carson Tennis Complex. The Tars also won titles in 1966, 1972 and 1991.

The Tars swept through the doubles to take a commanding lead. Matt Porter and Goran Sterijovski won, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles; Mark Thompson and Drew Sipka won, 9-7, at the No. 2 spot; and Andrew Grosilmond and Brandon Smith claimed an 8-4 victory at the No. 3 position.

"Winning the doubles really took the pressure off," said Rollins head coach Jim Poling. "(After winning the doubles), I tried to get them relaxed and tell them to go out and finish the job."

Smith was the first to finish in the singles play and claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the No. 4 position. Matt Porter earned the final point in the No. 1 spot. Facing the top player in Division II men's tennis, Mikael Maata from Hawaii Pacific, Porter registered a 6-3, 6-4 victory to finish the season with a 31-3 record.

"Everybody really fired on the right day," said Poling. "We have never played better. The guys jumped out strong and really believed they could do it. It's really a thrill. I'm happy for Matt and we also have four freshman who played for us today. I'm really excited."

Hawaii Pacific repeated the runner-up status it earned a year ago. The Sea Warriors downed Drury, 5-4, in the semifinals. Rollins defeated Brigham Young-Hawaii, 5-4, in the other semifinal.
