Jesse Gutierrez went hitless in his opening game of the Division II Baseball Championship finals.
And first impressions can mean about as much as a hillside full of kudzu.
The St. Mary's (Texas) slugging first baseman proceeded to lash 14 hits in his next 18 turns at bat -- including six home runs -- into that Southern vegetation beyond the walls of Patterson Field as the Rattlers won their first NCAA title in Montgomery, Alabama.
Central Missouri State provided the opposition in the June 2 final, but Gutierrez helped whip the Mules for 16 hits en route to an 11-3 victory that was the San Antonio school's 50th of the season against 13 losses.
"I told the guys on the bus today if they would just relax and go up to the plate, good things would happen," Gutierrez said. He capped his most-outstanding-player credentials by going 4-for-4 in the title game with two homers, three runs scored and four batted in.
For the series, the McAllen, Texas, native batted .636 with 10 runs scored and 11 driven in. His six home runs gave him 28 for the season.
Clayton Wentworth went the distance with 11 strikeouts for the victory, but his first inning was the ballgame in miniature.
The freshman right-hander issued three walks, hit two batters and threw a wild pitch to fall behind, 2-0, with the bases still loaded. Yet he escaped by striking out the next three in succession and swung the momentum over to St. Mary's.
In the bottom half of the first, the Rattlers capitalized by posting three runs on RBI singles from Gutierrez and designated hitter Fernando Tadefa, along with a sacrifice fly by catcher Joseph Contreras.
"This bunch of kids would never quit," Rattlers coach Charlie Migl said. "They went all season long, and the one thing you knew about them was they wouldn't quit."
The Mules, 53-10, evened the count in the second thanks to Seth Collins' run-scoring hit, but St. Mary's scored eight runs in the next five innings to make it a rout. Tadefa and second baseman Justin Jenkins had three hits each, while Contreras and third sacker Nick Siljendahl contributed two more apiece.
"I have so much respect for Central Missouri," Migl said. "Last night I watched them score six runs in the eighth inning (to come back and defeat North Florida), so I didn't think we had it until the last out."
The Rattlers became the first team since Cal Poly Pomona in 1976 to win the championship in their first NCAA tournament appearance.
