Sports sponsorship: Longwood College will begin competition in men's and women's cross country beginning this fall. Brent Newell, the Lancers strength and conditioning coach, has been selected as coach ... Dowling College will add men's and women's cross country, beginning this fall.

Milestones: Bob Chipman, men's basketball coach at Washburn University of Topeka, won his 500th game February 3 with an 82-62 decision over Southwest Baptist University. Chipman, the winningest coach in Washburn history, is in his 22nd year as head of the program. After the landmark victory, his career record stood at 500-176 (.740). Chipman is the 25th coach in Division II to reach 500 victories. He ranks seventh among active coaches in total victories ... Longwood women's basketball coach Shirley Duncan won her 300th career game January 8 in a 67-63 victory over Pfeiffer University. Duncan, in her 18th year at Longwood, stood 309-273 after the milestone win ... Rick Kilps, University of Wisconsin, Parkside, became only the third Division II men's soccer coach to win 300 games with an 8-0 victory over Lincoln University (Missouri) in August. "There have been a lot of memories here," Kilps said, "but what I'm most thankful for is the alumni and the boosters who have made this a special place to play soccer. It's very near and dear to my heart."
