The NCAA News

Sports sponsorship: Dominican College (New York) announced the addition of men's lacrosse for the 2002-03 academic year.

Milestones: George Mihalik of Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania captured his 100th career victory November 3 with a 21-3 victory over Millersville University of Pennsylvania. Mihalik, who took over the program in 1987, is unusual -- if not unique -- in that he holds a doctoral degree while also serving as head coach of a varsity college football team. "Personally, I take great pride in the fact that I am a professor," Mihalik said. "During the recruitment process, I share with the prospective student-athletes that I will ask them to do what George Mihalik does. I go to class. They go to class. I practice. They practice." With a 100-50-4 record, Mihalik is the second-winningest coach in Slippery Rock football history ... Linda Delk, women's volleyball coach at the University of Northern Colorado, captured her 700th career victory November 3. After the 3-0 win over the University of North Dakota, her career record in 26 years with the Bears stood at 702-288. She has reached the NCAA playoffs on 17 occasions and led teams to the Elite Eight seven times.

Miscellaneous: Saint Joseph's College (Indiana) celebrated the 60th anniversary of Richard F. Scharf Alumni Fieldhouse on December 8. Saint Joseph's dedicated the fieldhouse December 8, 1941, the day after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. It originally was named Alumni Fieldhouse and was renamed February 19, 1994, as Richard F. Scharf Alumni Fieldhouse. Scharf was a former Saint Joseph's director of athletics who also coached football, baseball and basketball. He also was founder of the Great Lakes Valley Conference ... Former University of South Carolina at Aiken baseball great Roberto Hernandez has announced a donation of $1 million to the South Carolina-Aiken baseball program. Hernandez, an 11-year veteran of Major League Baseball, is currently the closer for the Kansas City Royals. "If it wasn't for this school, I would not be here today," Hernandez said. The donation will go toward construction of a new 1,000-seat stadium to be named in his honor. South Carolina-Aiken also retired jersey No. 35 in honor of Hernandez.
