The NCAA News

Sooner or later, most things come to an end. For the Brigham Young-Hawaii Seasiders, the end came sooner than they would have liked -- and later than most expected. Lynn, last year's runner up, halted Brigham Young-Hawaii's 103-match win streak with a 5-3 win in the final of the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship May 14 at West Florida's Skeeter Carson Tennis Complex.

Lynn claimed titles in 1997 and 1998 before Brigham Young-Hawaii joined the NCAA Division II level from the NAIA. Brigham Young-Hawaii won the last two NCAA titles and amassed a record 103 wins during the past three seasons.

In the closest doubles match of the afternoon, Lynn's Maria Palacios and Maria Alves edged Amy Sun and Hana Krivonozkova, 9-7, at No. 3, while Lynn's No. 2 combination of Marketa Langerova and Andrea Kostricova cruised past Tomoko Sukegawa and Kellie Taguchi, 8-1. At the No. 1 spot, the Seasiders' Petra Gaspar and Tagifano So'onololei doubled up Monika Mastalirova and Marie Barbier, 8-4.

In singles, the Knights claimed wins at Nos. 1,4 and 6. Mastalirova was a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 comeback winner at No. 1; Kostricova beat Taguchi, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 4; and Maria Alves dominated Krivonozkova, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 6. So'onololei beat Barbier, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 and Sun defeated Palacios, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 5.

The No. 3 singles match between and Sukegawa was stopped with Langerova leading, 6-4, 4-6, 3-2.

Lynn topped Lees-McRae, Abilene Christian and West Florida en route to the final.
