Host Tampa won its third Division II Men's Soccer Championship and first since 1994 with a 2-1 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills December 2. But it took awhile for the Spartans to earn it.

Tampa was scoreless until the 80th minute of play when sophomore Jason Bell scored off a header from Josh Huettich. That tied the game at 1. Then with just 3:40 to play, forward Kareem Escayg, who scored the game-winning goal in Tampa's semifinal win, repeated the feat by stealing a pass at midfield and zipping a 25-yard shot past Toros goalkeeper Luis Morales.

The scoring flurry culminated a game in which Tampa spent most of its time playing from behind. Cal State Dominguez Hills scored almost before Tampa got off the bus when Joe Cartlidge headed Sean Lockhart's corner kick into the net in just the second minute of play.

The Spartans' late scores also preserved Tampa's second undefeated season in school history.

Despite the late goals, Morales was named the most outstanding defensive player of the tournament. Escayg, who scored in overtime to lead Tampa to a 2-1 semifinal win over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, was named the most outstanding offensive player.

Tampa's Robbie Folbrycht, Marlon Rojas, Roy Fink and Escayg were selected to the all-tournament team, along with Scott White, Cartlidge and Morales of Cal State Dominguez Hills. Abdoul Karim Diallo and Leonard Doramodou of Dowling, and Justin McMillian and David Mwendapole of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville rounded out the team.
