First-inning flurry carries Mavericks to softball pinnacle

Nebraska-Omaha packed a game's worth of scoring in the first inning of the Division II Women's Softball Championship game and rode out a 4-0 win over Lewis May 21 in Salem, Virginia.

Krista Unger tossed the shutout, giving up just two hits and striking out five batters to help lead the Mavericks to their first softball title and a 55-6 season under second-year coach Jeanne Tostenson.

When Tostenson and her team touched down at Omaha's Eppley Airfield with the championship in tow, a small, yet enthusiastic crowd greeted the Mavericks back to Nebraska, which 16 of the 17 players on the roster claim as their home state.

"If you can win nationals with an all-Nebraska team, there's no reason to look elsewhere," Tostenson told an Omaha World-Herald reporter. "We have great talent here in Nebraska, and that's a tribute to all of the coaches in the younger ages, the high-school coaches and the summer coaches.

"I love winning nationals, but I don't enjoy the attention on me. It is a total team effort. The players are the ones who did all the work. When we got to the national tournament, all I had to do was write the names on the lineup."

The first name Tostenson wrote on her lineup card got the Mavericks rolling right away. Lead-off batter Jenny Redlinger singled to open the bottom of the first and scored after two more hits and an error. Another error and a double by catcher Sarah Scheppers produced three more runs.

Unger and Lewis pitcher Kim Mackinson then took over the game.

Nebraska-Omaha would leave just two other runners on base in the next six innings, while Mackinson proceeded to strike out seven batters.

Unger, Scheppers, Kelly Moats and Kelsey Duckworth were named to the all-tournament team for the national champions. Lewis placed Mackinson, Jill Karwoski, Mandy Driscoll and Katie Schaefer. Audrey Williams from Alabama-Huntsville, Melanie Baker and Brandi Cope of Humboldt State and Erica Miller from Bloomsburg also were honored.
