St. Augustine's used strong performances in the 55-meter dash and 55-meter hurdles to snap Abilene Christian's eight-year winning streak in the Division II Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship.

The Falcons scored 33 of their 63 total points in the two events, and finished 15 points in front of runner-up Abilene Christian. The championship is St. Augustine's third overall to go along with titles in 1985 and 1987.

Kia Davis won the 55 hurdles for St. Augustine's, with teammates Lakeya Williams and Samaiyah Islam finishing second and fifth, respectively. Davis also ran a leg on the Falcons' victorious 1,600-meter relay unit.

In the 55 dash, Carlene Cummings placed third and Anna Teschmaker fourth, accounting for 11 of St. Augustine's points.

Cummings also was a key contributor to the Falcons' return to the top spot with her effort in the horizontal jumps. She added 14 points by coming in second in the triple jump and third in the long jump.

Maresa Cadienhead won the high jump and Hillerie Shelton the triple jump for Abilene Christian, which extended its title run in 2000 with the same number of points it scored this year.

North Dakota State, last year's runner-up to Abilene Christian, was third this year with 38 1/2 points. Diandra Bauer was an individual champion for the Bison in the 20-pound weight throw.

Lana Jekabsone of Lewis (800-meter run) and Heather Leverington of Emporia State (shot put) both won their third consecutive titles. They are the fourth and fifth athletes to win the same event at least three times in the 16 years the championship has been contested.

While no meet records were broken, one was tied. Sandy Pelkofer of South Dakota and Jennifer Swanson of UC Davis both cleared 12 feet, 3 1/2 inches in the pole vault to join three others who have reached that height. Pelkofer won the event based on fewer misses.
