The score 80-59 may be forever etched into the minds of those associated with the St. Augustine's track and field program.

As the St. Augustine's men were celebrating their 21-point victory by that score in the Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships (see story below), the Falcons' women's squad was rejoicing its own 80-59 triumph over second-place Western State in the women's championships May 24-26 at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.

St. Augustine's double win in the outdoor meets gave the Falcons a sweep of all four Division II track and field championships in 2001, a first for the program. The outdoor title is St. Augustine's second in a row and third overall.

Kia Davis was the Falcons' leader this year, winning both the 200-meter dash and 100-meter hurdles. She also teamed with Anna Teschmaker, Georgia Mullings and Carlene Cummings to capture the 400-meter relay.

Mullings was St. Augustine's only other individual winner, as she sprinted to the 400-meter dash title. Davis and Mullings also were members of the Falcons' 1,600-meter relay unit that finished second.

Western State had its highest team finish in the championships' history, bettering its fourth-place effort in 1996. Jennifer Michel spearheaded the Mountaineers' effort by winning the inaugural edition of the 3,000-meter steeplechase and placing third in the 1,500-meter run. Zuzana Sarikova was third in both the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs for Western State.

Joining Davis as a double winner was Kennesaw State's Marjo Venalainen, who headed the field in the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs. The track and field titles are the first for Venalainen, the Division II cross country individual champion in 1999 and 2000.

Lana Jekabsone of Lewis repeated as the winner of the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. Heather Leverington of Emporia State and Abilene Christian's Hillerie Shelton were return winners in the shot put and triple jump, respectively, after first winning their events in 1999.

Leverington also had the championships' only meet record with a throw of 53 feet, 5 inches, in the shot put.
