Texas turned in another dominating performance at the Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships March 22-24 and validated its top billing by claiming a seventh team title.

During the course of the three-day meet at Texas A&M, the Longhorns won 11 individual titles and set six NCAA records en route to accumulating 5971/2 points.

The squad's versatility and depth kept challenger Stanford firmly in second place. The Cardinal earned 4571/2 points, while Tennessee (3301/2), Southern California (299) and Florida (265) rounded out the top five.

Swimmer of the meet Nate Dusing led all competitors with 57 points. In addition to contributing to four of Texas' five relay wins, Dusing claimed the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual medley titles for himself. Teammate Brendan Hansen grabbed both breaststroke titles, breaking Mike Barrowman's 1990 record in the 200-yard event. And teammate Troy Dumais swept the one- and three-meter springboard dives.

Several swimmers contributed fine post-Olympic swims for their respective schools. Southern California freshman Klete Keller powered his way to victories in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles. California's Anthony Ervin tied Matt Biondi's 1987 record in the 100-yard freestyle. Ian Crocker won the 100-yard butterfly for Texas, while Stanford's Adam Messner defended his title in the 200-yard butterfly.

Of the record-breaking performances, perhaps the most outstanding came from Michigan's Chris Thompson, who captured his long-sought-after title in the 1,650-yard freestyle. The 2000 Olympic bronze medalist in the 1,500-meter freestyle broke former Michigan and Olympic gold medalist Tom Dolan's record set in 1995.

"I talked with (Tom) Dolan before we left and he told me to go after it," Thompson said. "It feels awesome to add to the great tradition at Michigan."

Texas ended the meet with a record-setting win in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Texas' Eddie Reese, named coach of the year after the meet, said, "This was fun. If you go by total points, I don't know if we can call this team the best ever at an NCAA meet, because we would be third on the list. But if you look at the strength of the meet and how fast people had to go, we were the fastest team in the best meet ever."
