IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Minnesota made history twice, snapping Iowa's decade-long domination to win its first Division I Wrestling Championships and becoming the first team to capture the national title with no competitors in any of the individual finals.

The championships were held March 15-17.

The Golden Gophers, who have finished no worse than third in each of the previous four years, racked up 29 points from its 10 wrestlers in the consolation rounds to open a 138 1/2 - 117 1/2 lead over six-time defending champion Iowa.

The Hawkeyes earned just 5 1/2 points from their three consolation wrestlers and needed three pins and a technical fall from their four finalists to win. The Hawkeyes were attempting to win their 10th national title in 11 years. But the efforts of Iowa finalists Jody Strittmatter, Eric Juergens, Doug Schwab and T.J. Williams fell short as Iowa finished as runner-up with 125 1/2 points.

Minnesota also became the first team to have 10 all-Americans (wrestlers who placed in eighth place or higher).

"We came back and got it together today," Minnesota coach J Robinson said. "We did what we had to do. We've been working for this for a long time. We're going to enjoy this for a while."

Robinson, an Iowa assistant from 1973 to 1984 before leaving for Minnesota, said winning the championship in Carver-Hawkeye Arena was special.

"I have very positive feelings about Iowa," Robinson said. "To win this here is amazing."

Minnesota heavyweight Garrett Lowney, who was upset in the semifinals but scored a pin in the wrestlebacks to finish third in the tournament, said the Golden Gophers never gave up even though he and five teammates lost in the semifinals.

"We knew what we had to do," he said. "It's definitely a team sport. We were thinking, 'We've got to get points for the team.' "

Oklahoma State, which had three finalists, was a distant third in the 78-team field with 115 1/2 points. Oklahoma was fourth with 93 1/2 points and Illinois rounded out the top five with 89 points.

After a strong start, Minnesota faltered on the tournament's second day, allowing Iowa to take a lead going to the final day of competition. The Hawkeyes rebounded from a shaky quarterfinal performance and advanced four wrestlers into the championship round. Minnesota's 13 1/2 - point lead after the quarterfinals evaporated when all six wrestlers lost in the semifinals. Oklahoma State, which won the championship in 1994, also was in the hunt after sending three of its five semifinalists into the finals.

In the end, the Gophers' depth made the difference.

"Minnesota had 10 guys coming in and those 10 guys scored points," Iowa coach Jim Zalesky said. "We had eight qualifiers so we knew that we were behind going in. We knew that we had to wrestle above our level, but give Minnesota credit. They had a great tournament."

Cael Sanderson, Iowa State's junior 184-pound champion, remained undefeated and won his third straight title, defeating Oklahoma State's Daniel Cormier, 8-4. Sanderson's record stands at 119-0 in his college career.

Sanderson won the most outstanding wrestler award for the third straight year. In 36 of his 40 victories this year, Sanderson won by fall, technical fall or major decision.
