Management Council appointments include 10 new members

A total of 13 members have been either reappointed or selected for the first time to serve on the Division I Management Council, effective at the conclusion of the 2001 Convention. Three members currently serving on the Council were reappointed, including Robert Aronson, faculty athletics representative at the University of Washington; Ellen Perry, associate director of athletics at Pennsylvania State University; and Richard Tharp, director of athletics at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

In addition, 10 new members were appointed to the Council. They are: Darlene Bailey, associate director of athletics, Southwest Missouri State University; Mike Bobinski, director of athletics, Xavier University; Alison Cone, associate director of athletics, California Polytechnic State University; Paul Dee, director of athletics, University of Miami (Florida); Cheryl Levick, director of athletics, Santa Clara University; Stephanie McDonald, assistant commissioner, Mid-American Conference; Bernadette McGlade, associate commissioner, Atlantic Coast Conference; James Murphy, director of athletics, Davidson College; Kevin Porter, assistant director of athletics, Northeastern University; and Lynda Tealer, associate commissioner, Southland Conference.

Following are biographical sketches of the 10 new members:

Bailey

Bailey represents the Missouri Valley Conference and replaces Andrea Myers, athletics director at Indiana State University.

An associate director of athletics at Southwest Missouri State since 1998, Bailey oversees the operations of several sports and serves at the athletics department's senior woman administrator. She came to the school after six years in a similar post at Wichita State University. There, she was the chief financial officer of the university's athletics program and the department's compliance officer.

Bailey also has held administrative positions at Ohio University, Eastern Washington University and the University of Idaho.

She received her undergraduate degree from William Jewell College in 1982 and earned a master's degree in sports administration from Ohio in 1983. She also received her doctorate from Ohio in 1987.

Bobinski

Bobinski represents the Atlantic 10 Conference and replaces Commissioner Linda Bruno on the Management Council.

Bobinski came to Xavier as director of athletics in 1998 after having served in the same capacity for four years at the University of Akron. While at Akron, Bobinski oversaw 17 sports. Before that, Bobinski was an associate director of athletics at the U.S. Naval Academy from 1989 to 1994. At Navy, Bobinski was responsible for business operations, capital projects, facility and game management, ticket operations, and daily operations of the football and basketball programs.

Bobinski is a 1979 graduate from the University of Notre Dame, where he graduated magna cum laude in business administration. He was a member of Notre Dame's baseball team for four years and served as an assistant baseball coach for the Fighting Irish in 1984 and 1985. He stayed at Notre Dame through 1988, serving stints as associate and assistant business manager.

Cone

Cone, from the Big West Conference, replaces John McCutcheon, athletics director at Cal Poly.

She currently is in her seventh year as the senior associate athletics director at Cal Poly. Hired in August 1994, Cone has overseen the school's athletics compliance and academic departments during her tenure, as well as serving on several department committees. Among other duties as the senior woman administrator, Cone has coordinated all department personnel issues and has overseen facility scheduling. In addition to scheduling guest speakers and lectures for the department and staff, Cone coordinates the Cal Poly Block P society that represents all varsity teams on campus.

Cone arrived at Cal Poly from Washington State University, where she served as the director of athletics academic services since 1992. Before that, Cone was the academic coordinator at California State University, Fullerton, from 1983 to 1992 and was the director for student services at California State University, Dominguez Hills, from 1982 to 1983.

Dee

Representing the Big East Conference, Dee replaces Boston College Athletics Director Gene DeFilippo on the Council.

Dee has served as athletics director at Miami (Florida) since 1993. Before his appointment, Dee had been Miami's vice-president and general counsel since 1981. During his tenure as athletics director, Dee has hired more than half of the current head coaches, completed numerous facility upgrades and spearheaded efforts to increase gender equity in the athletics department. He currently serves as a member of the Big East Conference's executive committee and as chair of the Big East football conference.

Before coming to the university, Dee worked with a Miami law firm and was a law clerk for a district judge. He received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Florida in 1970 and his master's of education and juris doctor degrees from Miami in 1973 and 1977, respectively.

Levick

Levick, now with the West Coast Conference, replaces WCC Associate Commissioner Teresa Keuhn on the Council.

Levick is in her first year as athletics director at Santa Clara after serving for 12 years as the senior associate director of athletics at Stanford University. She also is completing a term as chair of the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics, with which she has spearheaded several initiatives that have enhanced participation opportunities for women in intercollegiate athletics.

At Stanford, Levick was a member of several university and Pacific-10 Conference committees, and she also served an integral role when Stanford and the City of San Jose hosted the 1999 Women's Final Four.

Before her tenure at Stanford, Levick was an assistant commissioner of the Pac-10 from 1986 to 1988. She also served for four years at the NCAA national office as the assistant director of communications and as the assistant director of women's programs. She is a 1974 graduate of the University of Missouri, Columbia. She also earned a master's degree in athletics administration from Indiana University, Bloomington, in 1977.

McDonald

McDonald, the assistant commissioner of the Mid-American Conference, replaces Ball State University Director of Athletics Andrea Seger.

McDonald joined the MAC in September 1999 after a year as director of compliance at North Carolina State University. Before that, she was the athletics compliance coordinator at Cleveland State University.

McDonald is the administrator for women's basketball for the MAAC and the staff liaison for women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field and women's tennis.

A four-year letter-winner in basketball, McDonald is a graduate of Texas Woman's University, where she earned a degree in accounting in 1993, and from the University of Texas School of Law, where she earned her juris doctorate in 1996.

McGlade

The associate commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference, McGlade replaces Deborah A. Yow, athletics director at the University of Maryland, College Park.

McGlade was named the ACC's first assistant commissioner for women's basketball operations after spending 17 years at the Georgia Institute of Technology, including four as the senior associate director of athletics for sports programs and special assistant to the director of athletics.

She assumed her administrative role after serving as Georgia Tech's first full-time women's basketball coach from 1981 to 1988. In addition to her responsibilities at Georgia Tech, McGlade has extensive NCAA and ACC experience, including a stint on the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics. She also served on the Division I Women's Basketball Committee, which she chaired from 1998 to 2000, and she was tournament director for the Women's Final Four in Atlanta, which secured the first pre-sellout in the history of the event.

McGlade earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Murphy

Murphy represents the Southern Conference and replaces Appalachian State University Faculty Athletics Representative Alan Hauser on the Council.

Murphy took over at athletics director at Davidson in February 1996, succeeding Terry Holland, who became director of athletics at the University of Virginia. Before assuming the helm at Davidson, Murphy had enjoyed a successful stint as executive associate athletics director and chief financial officer for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association.

At Davidson, Murphy has engineered campaigns to increase scholarships and fund several capital projects. He also played a role in Charlotte's successful bid to host the 1999 and 2000 Division I Men's Soccer Championships.

Murphy is a 1978 Davidson graduate, and he earned a master's degree from Georgia Tech in 1979. He worked from 1979 to 1985 as an audit manager with an international public accounting firm.

Porter

An America East Conference representative, Porter became assistant athletics director for compliance at Northeastern in June 1998.

In that role, Porter supervises and administers a program designed to ensure Northeastern's full compliance with NCAA rules and regulations. He is a liaison between the athletics department and the NCAA as well as Northeastern's conferences, handling all compliance-related issues.

Before his current role at Northeastern, Porter served for more than three years as the university's assistant athletics director for operations. He oversaw all aspects of the department's operations, including team travel and scheduling. Before his time in Boston, Porter was the assistant director of facilities at the University of Cincinnati from September 1994 to December 1995.

Porter earned a bachelor of science degree in business/marketing from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 1991 and then went on to receive a master of science degree in sports management from West Virginia University in 1994.

Tealer

Tealer, who has served previously on the Council, returns to the group as a representative of the Southland Conference, replacing Commissioner Greg Sankey.

Tealer joined the Southland as associate commissioner in March 2000 after serving as director of compliance at Santa Clara University for four years.

Tealer oversees and administers Southland championships and serves as the conference's senior woman administrator.

After serving as the director of compliance at Santa Clara for four months, Tealer was promoted to assistant athletics director for student-athlete services and senior woman administrator. She spent three years in that role before being appointed as assistant athletics director for intercollegiate sports and continuing as senior woman administrator at the university.

Tealer is a graduate of the University of San Diego, where she earned a degree in business administration while playing basketball four years for the Toreros. She also holds a juris doctor degree from the University of Texas at Austin School of Law.
