Georgia's deja vu leads to first women's golf championship

Four-shot deficits have become a good luck charm to Georgia's women's golf team. The Bulldogs trailed by four strokes heading into the Southeastern Conference Championships and rallied to claim victory, and the team duplicated the feat May 22-25 at Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, to win the Division I Women's Golf Championships team title.

"I don't know what the probability of just winning the SECs and NCAAs is, but I'm sure it's not very good," said Laura Henderson, a senior in the Georgia lineup. "If there's any team to do it, I guess it's us. We were so focused and so well-prepared for those two events. To win the national championship in the last round of my last collegiate tournament ... I don't know if I can express how much that means to me."

Georgia overcame Duke, which led entering the final day after a third-round 290. The Bulldogs fired a 290 on the final day, besting Duke's 297 to claim the crown. It was the first title in women's golf for Georgia.

Reilley Rankin and Summer Sirmons carded even-par 72s, while Henderson and Angela Jerman shot a pair of 73s to round out Georgia's counting scores.

"This has to be the greatest day of my life," Georgia coach Todd McCorkle said. "These girls have worked so hard to get here. It just makes it that much more special."

McCorkle, who is in his first year at Georgia, has won back-to-back national championships. A year ago, he led Arizona to the NCAA title before assuming the helm of the Georgia program.

Henderson and McCorkle attributed the championship success in part to the team's familiarity with being in pressure situations.

"I know that being in contention at almost every tournament and winning so many of them over the past couple of seasons helped prepare us for today," Henderson said. "It helped us fight through this round."

"They're going to have to make a new word to add to the dictionary to describe what I'm feeling," said Rankin, who posted six birdies and six bogeys in the final round.

Texas placed third in the team race, with Auburn fourth. UCLA and Oklahoma State tied for fifth.

Individually, Duke's Candy Hannemann fired two straight 69s to tie Lorena Ochoa of Arizona and force a playoff. Hannemann won the individual championship in the playoff. Southern California's Candie Kung and Katy Harris of LSU tied for third, while individual competitor Young-A Yang of Tennessee placed fifth.
