Gators say 'Later' to men's golf field in runaway victory

The NCAA News

Buoyed by three strong finishing rounds, the Florida Gators won the Division I Men's Golf Championships team title May 30-June 2 at the Duke University Golf Club in Durham, North Carolina.

The Gators chomped the competition, winning by 18 strokes. The margin was the third-largest since 1968 when the tournament went to a four-round format. Florida blistered the front nine on the final day, which helped the Gators post a tournament-low 275 team total.

"That was an incredible show," Florida head coach Buddy Alexander said. "It was overwhelming what happened on that front nine and then it just continued right through the 14th hole. We just kept making birdies. I can't say enough about this team."

After posting a first-round 296, which Alexander called "awful," the Gators found their rhythm. A second-round 278 left them five shots behind leader Arizona. After heavy rain and lightning forced officials to postpone the last few holes of the third round, the Gators had claimed the lead for good.

"The last rain delay that I remember was 1993 when we won (the championship)," Alexander said. "So, I'm pulling for rain delays from now on. I didn't think the weather was a determining factor."

Florida's Nick Gilliam completed the double victory for the Gators, winning medalist honors with a final-round 71. Teammate Camilo Benedetti fired a final-round 65 to finish in a tie for second with Augusta State's Jamie Elson. Benedetti and Elson finished three shots behind Gilliam.

"What an amazing feeling," said Gilliam, a senior. "I couldn't have dreamed a better picture. To play this well in my last tournament is really all you can ask."

Gilliam was an unlikely winner. His best NCAA championship finish was 70th, and he had never won a college tournament.

"That's just how golf is sometimes," he said. "I was playing well and my putts started to drop. That was the difference."

Four Gators turned in scores below par on the final day.

"What Florida is doing is incredible," said Clemson coach Larry Penley. "I'm perfectly content with the effort we gave this week. We played as hard as we can play."

Arizona stumbled on the final day with a 294, putting the Wildcats in third place. Georgia Tech was fourth and Georgia, the top-rated team in the country for much of the year, placed fifth.

Kris Mikkelsen of Georgia Tech and Chez Reavie of Arizona State finished tied for fourth individually.

The title was Florida's fourth in men's golf. The Gators also won in 1968, 1973 and 1993.
