Brigham Young ran its streak of winning the Division I Women's Cross Country Championships team title in odd-numbered years to three November 19 at Furman.

The Cougars added to their 1997 and 1999 titles with a dominant performance, winning by 86 points over North Carolina State. All five Brigham Young scorers placed in the top 25 as they combined for a team count of 62 points.

The margin of victory is the second largest in the championships' history, bettered only by Villanova's 90-point triumph in 1990. Brigham Young also has not done poorly in even-numbered years recently, placing second in both 1998 and last year.

"This was a great team race," said Cougars' head coach Patrick Shane. "This is what cross country is all about. Everyone ran well today. There are a lot of great teams out there and a lot of deserving teams and we feel honored to have won."

Michaela Manova started the procession of Cougars across the finish line, coming in fifth with a time of 20 minutes, 42 seconds over the 6,000-meter course. Jessie Kindschi was just two spots behind Manova at 20 minutes, 49 seconds, and Tara Northcutt was only two places after Kindschi with a mark of 20 minutes, 55 seconds.

Lindsey Thomsen and Sarah Taylor completed Brigham Young's return to the top by finishing 23rd and 24th, respectively.

Kristin Price led North Carolina State with a fourth-place finish. The Wolfpack made its division-leading 19th team appearance in the championships, and the runner-up effort equaled its best showing.

Tara Chaplin of Arizona bettered the course record by two seconds in winning the individual title. Chaplin registered a time of 20 minutes, 24 seconds, seven seconds better than second-place finisher Renee Metivier.

"It feels great," said Chaplin, whose best finish in three previous championships was 33rd in 1999. "That was the hardest I have ever fought at the end of the race."

Chaplin's win helped Arizona to place fourth as a team, the first time the Wildcats have cracked the top five. Georgetown was third, equaling its best team placement. The Hoyas also ended in the third position in 1992 and 1993.
