Arizona blossoms in battle of women's softball perennials

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Arizona's Jennie Finch finished her 32-0 season on the mound with a 1-0 win over UCLA in the Women's College World Series championship game May 28.

The championship match-up was a familiar one for Finch and the Wildcats, who faced their Pacific-10 Conference rival for the fourth time this year. Arizona had won two of the first three. The two teams have now met six times in championship-game history. Arizona owns six NCAA titles, second only to UCLA's eight.

Home runs had been the difference for Arizona's advancing to the championship game, including a home run in each of the Wildcats' three games of the WCWS from senior Toni Mascarenas. A home run proved to be the difference in the championship game, too.

While UCLA pitcher Amanda Freed held Arizona to just three hits in the final, one a homer from senior catcher Lindsey Collins in the fourth inning.

"I told our team that this was the team and now was the time to get back here and play well," said Arizona head coach Mike Candrea. "I thought we struggled offensively, but when we needed a key hit, we got it."

Finch allowed only four hits in the game to gain the shutout. The junior pitcher was named the most outstanding player for the tournament after setting an NCAA record for wins in a season without a loss, which had been held by UCLA assistant coach Lisa Fernandez (29-0 in 1992).

"I think that (Finch) has done a tremendous job developing," Candrea said. "She's a mentally tough pitcher. I've always felt she could throw the pitch when we need her to. I think what separates the great pitchers from the average pitchers is being able to perform in crunch time."

Arizona's advance to the championship game included handing LSU its second loss of the series, but the Wildcats had their toughest game in the winner's bracket against Oklahoma. The defending national champion Sooners had Finch down, 4-0, before Mascarenas connected on a three-run homer to help Arizona to a comeback victory. UCLA defeated Stanford, which was appearing in its first WCWS, to advance to the championship game.

Arizona's Collins, Mascarenas and Nicole Giordano joined Finch on the all-tournament team, while UCLA placed Tairia Mims, Freed and Claire Sua. Stanford's Jessica Mendoza, LSU's Britni Sneed and Julie Wiese, and Oklahoma's Jennifer Stewart and Christy Ring also were honored.

The total attendance for the series -- 33,967 -- was the second-largest in history. In 2000, the total attendance record was set at 38,102. Three of the largest single-session crowds in history witnessed games during this year's series.
