A perfect storm: Hurricanes blow through CWS field

OMAHA, Nebraska -- Miami (Florida) was perfect for the postseason and nearly flawless at the finish.

The Hurricanes completed a nine-game swath through the Division I Baseball Championship by blowing past Stanford, 12-1, June 16 at the Men's College World Series. The title was Miami's fourth overall and the second under Jim Morris.

"We pitched great, played flawless defense and we swung the bats," said Morris, who has led the Hurricanes to seven Omaha appearances in eight seasons. "You could never ask for any more than the way we played the game today, and a lot of that was due to senior leadership."

Two of those seniors were starting pitcher Tom Farmer and first baseman Kevin Brown. Farmer notched the victory by scattering a run on four hits over the first 5 2/3 innings, while Brown homered, doubled and drove in five runs.

"Today, the key for me was to stay relaxed out there and get comfortable in the first inning," said Farmer, who finished the season 15-2. "Pretty much everything I was throwing I was saying, 'That's an out.' I don't have to do too much when I've got a defense like we have."

Brown's home run in the fifth inning was his third of the series and fifth in eight career CWS games. He batted .467 for the week and noted that Miami's experience with the Omaha festivities made a difference.

"We didn't pay attention to all that," he said. "We had our own goal. I thought it was great that Nebraska was in it for the home crowd, and we couldn't worry about the President coming."

President Bush made his CWS debut at the tournament's June 8 opener between Stanford and Tulane, throwing out the first ball and visiting with all eight teams. Perhaps of even greater interest, however, was Nebraska's first appearance in front of the suddenly partisan fans. But the Cornhuskers were eliminated in a pair of one-run games.

"We do want to meet President Bush again," Morris said with a laugh after the championship. "And we'd like to challenge one of his Little League teams to a game right there on the (White House) lawn. So if he wants to schedule that, we'll come on up."

Miami, 53-12, reached Stanford pitching for four in the third and five in the fifth before the Cardinal finally dented the plate. The 12-1 score equaled the largest margin of victory in the championship game's 55-year history, and matched the score from Minnesota's 1956 triumph over Arizona.

"We didn't give them much of a game," said Stanford coach Mark Marquess. "They hammered us pretty good. As they've done throughout the College World Series, they exploded on us in a couple of innings."

It marked the second consecutive championship-final setback for the Cardinal, 51-17, who fell to LSU's late-inning rally last season.

"Last year was a different game," Marquess said. "Last year it happened all of a sudden. To be candid, this wasn't much of a game. We weren't in this one."

Miami Charlton Jimerson earned most outstanding player honors by batting .333, swiping seven bases and sparkling defensively in center field.
