1980

April The NCAA holds the National Collegiate Men's and Women's Rifle Championships, the Association's first co-ed championship. Tennessee Technological University wins the first men's and women's combined team title.

1981

November 21-22 Field hockey premieres as an NCAA championship sport in Divisions I, II and III.

November 21 Schools in Divisions II and Division III vie for the first titles in each division in cross country.

November 23 Wichita State University hosts the first NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Championships.

December 18-20 Divisions I, II and III debut championships in volleyball.

1982

March 11-13 The first NCAA women's championships in swimming and diving are held, one for Division II and one for Division III.

March 18-20 Division I launches its first swimming and diving championships. Also premiering that weekend are championships in Division II and Division III basketball.

March 25-27 San Jose State University hosts the first National Collegiate Women's Fencing Championships. The first Division II Women's Gymnastics Championships also premieres.

March 26 and 28 Old Dominion University plays host to the inaugural Division I Women's Basketball Championships. A Division I championship in gymnastics also debuts March 26-27.

May 16-23 Tennis becomes a championship sport for women in Divisions I, II and III.

May 22-23 Widener University is the site for the first National Collegiate Women's Lacrosse Championship.

May 25-29 The inaugural National Collegiate Women's Golf Championships are held. Also debuting are the Divisions II and III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, with California State University, Sacramento, hosting in Division II and North Central College hosting in Division III.

May 27-30 Outdoor track and field debuts as an NCAA championship sport in Division I. Also, the first NCAA softball championships are held in Divisions I, II and III.

November 20-21 The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, takes home the first crown from the National Collegiate Women's Soccer Championship.

1983

March 9-12 The first National Collegiate Men's and Women's Skiing Championships, with combined men's and women's team scoring, are hosted by the University of Montana.

March 11-12 The University of Nebraska, Lincoln, takes home the team title at the first National Collegiate Women's Indoor Track Championships.

1984

Division II discontinues its field hockey championship. Division II schools compete with Division III in field hockey until 1992.

1985

March 8-9 Bates College hosts the first Division III Men's and Women's Indoor Track Championships.

March 15-16 North Dakota State University plays host to the first Division II Men's and Women's Indoor Track Championships.

May 19 The College of New Jersey wins the inaugural Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship.

1986

November 16 University of Rochester takes home the crown in the first Division III Women's Soccer Championship.

1987

The Division II Women's Gymnastics Championships is discontinued. All NCAA divisions continue to be eligible for a championship in the sport through the establishment of a National Collegiate Championship.

1988

November 13 Barry University hosts the first Division II Women's Soccer Championship.

1990

March 24-28 The first National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships, with combined team titles, are held. (Women's fencing is discontinued.)

1992

November 8 Field hockey is re-established as a championship sport in Division II.

1996

The National Collegiate Women's Golf Championships are split into two championships (Division I and Divisions II/III).

1997

The University of Washington takes home the team title in the first National Collegiate Women's Rowing Championship.

2000

May 13 C.W. Post Campus/Long Island University wins the inaugural Division II Women's Lacrosse Championship.

May 16-19 Florida Southern College claims the first team title in Division II golf, while Methodist College wins the first team title in Division III.

2001

March 23 and 25 Women's ice hockey premieres as a National Collegiate championship, known as the Women's Frozen Four. The University of Minnesota, Duluth, takes home the title.

May 12-13 The University of California, Los Angeles, wins the inaugural National Collegiate Women's Water Polo Championship.

2002

March 8-9 The first Division III Women's Ice Hockey Championship will be held.

May 31-June 2 The inaugural Divisions II and III Women's Rowing Championships will take place
