Winter championships previews -- Men's Indoor Track and Field

DIVISION I

Dates and site: The championships will be March 9 and 10 at Arkansas.

Field: A total of 270 athletes will compete in the championships. Athletes qualify by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event.

Selection date: The spots remaining in the field after the automatic qualifiers are entered will be filled from the descending-order list of provisional qualifiers March 5.

2000 champion: Arkansas.

Top team contenders: Arkansas, Southern Methodist, Stanford, TCU.

Top individual contenders: Libor Charfreitag, Southern Methodist; Brandon Couts, Baylor; Kim Collins, TCU; Kenny Evans, Arkansas; Sharif Karie, Arkansas; Ato Modibo, Clemson; Jonathon Riley, Stanford; Leonard Scott, Tennessee.

DIVISION II

Dates and site: The championships will be March 9 and 10 at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston. The Eastern College Athletic Conference is the host.

Field: A total of 154 athletes will compete in the championships. Athletes qualify by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event.

Selection date: The spots remaining in the field after the automatic qualifiers are entered will be filled from the descending-order list of provisional qualifiers February 27.

2000 champion: Abilene Christian.

Top team contenders: Abilene Christian, New York Tech, St. Augustine's, Western St.

Top individual contenders: Michael Aish, Western St.; Nick Burrow, South Dakota St.; Paston Coke, New York Tech; John Kemboi, Abilene Christian; Dane Magloire, St. Augustine's; Paul Markel, Saginaw Valley; Alfred Rugema, Abilene Christian; Tim Rusan, St. Augustine's.

DIVISION III

Dates and site: The championships will be March 9 and 10 at Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Field: A total of 200 athletes will compete in the championships. Athletes qualify by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event.

Selection date: The spots remaining in the field after the automatic qualifiers are entered will be filled from the descending-order list of provisional qualifiers March 5.

2000 champion: Lincoln (Pennsylvania).

Top team contenders: Christopher Newport, Lincoln (Pennsylvania), Wheaton (Massachusetts), Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Top individual contenders: Chaz Clemons, Lincoln (Pennsylvania); Chris Cobbs, Lincoln (Pennsylvania); Raheim Greenridge, Wheaton (Massachusetts); Mike Koenning, Wisconsin-La Crosse; Dayne Ross, Lincoln (Pennsylvania); Damon Talley, Christopher Newport; Safwan Williams, Lynchburg.

St. Augustine's has finished first (seven times) or second (eight times) in all 15 Division II championships.
