The NCAA News

Total NCAA membership stands at 1,267 as of September 1 -- six more members than ever before.

That figure includes 977 active members, 59 provisional members, 94 voting conferences, 30 nonvoting conferences, 22 corresponding members and 85 affiliated members.

Active membership is the same as last year, while provisional membership -- still affected by a two-year Association-wide membership moratorium that will expire next year -- is down by three.

Division I membership is up by three active members, climbing from 318 to 321, while the number of Division II active members is down from 264 to 260, mostly because of institutions that have completed the reclassification period to Division I. Division III active membership has increased from 395 to 396.

Six institutions completed the reclassification process for all or part of their program for 2001-02. They are:

University of California, Riverside, from Division II to Division I-AAA.

Mercyhurst College, a Division II member now conducting women's ice hockey, rather than women's lacrosse, at the Division I level.

Morris Brown College, from Division II to Division I-AA.

State University of New York at Binghamton, from Division II to Division I-AAA.

University of South Florida, from Division I-AA to Division I-A.

Wayne State University (Michigan), a Division II member now conducting men's and women's ice hockey at the Division I level.

Lesley University and East Texas Baptist University completed the provisional member process and are now active members of Division III.
