Spring championships preview -- Softball

Division I

Dates and sites: Regional play will be May 17-20 at campus locations, and the Women's College World Series will be May 24-28 at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

Field: Forty-eight teams are selected for championship play. Six teams will participate at each of eight regional sites. The Women's College World Series will include the eight regional winners.

Selection date: May 13.

2000 champion: Oklahoma.

Top team contenders: UCLA, Oklahoma, Arizona, California, Alabama.

Players to watch: Stacey Nuveman, UCLA; Kelly Kretschman, Alabama; Lauren Bauer, Arizona; Jocelyn Forest, California; Lisa Carey, Oklahoma.

Division II

Dates and sites: Regional play will be May 11-12 on the campus of competing institutions. The finals will be at James I. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Virginia, May 17-21.

Field: The championship field is 32 teams. Four teams will participate at each of eight regional sites in a double-elimination format. Regional winners will advance to an eight-team, double-elimination final.

Selection date: May 7.

2000 champion: North Dakota State.

Top team contenders: Bloomsburg, North Dakota State, Columbus State, Humboldt State.

Players to watch: Julie Fromm, North Dakota State; Kerri Cooper, Bloomsburg; Amanda Burson, Columbus State; Lacey Gardner, Kennesaw State; Shelly Rhein, North Dakota State.

Division III

Dates and sites: First-round games will be played May 11-14. The finals will be May 17-21 at Carson Park in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Field: The championship has a field of 40 teams. Five teams will compete at each of eight regional sites in a double-elimination format. Winners of the regionals will advance to an eight-team, double-elimination final.

Selection date: May 6.

2000 champion: St. Mary's (Minnesota).

Top team contenders: Alma, Central (Iowa), Endicott, St. Mary's (Minnesota), Salisbury State, William Paterson.

Players to watch: Leslie Prochaska, Chapman; Jill Hocking and Jackie Huegel, St. Mary's (Minnesota); April Harned, Salisbury State; Diane Naugle, William Paterson.

Chapman will be trying to break its string of second-place finishes in the Division III championship. Since winning their first title in 1995, the Panthers have placed second four times, including the last three years.
