Doris Dixon, NCAA director of federal relations, has left the Association after serving as the first director of the Washington, D.C.-based office.

Hired in April 1995, Dixon was charged with creating the first federal relations office for the NCAA in Washington, D.C. The office has been housed at One Dupont Circle, where most other higher education associations are located. In addition to monitoring activities in Congress important to intercollegiate athletics, Dixon also has helped the Association build relationships with other important Washington-based constituents.

"As the first director of federal relations, Doris had the task of building a program from the ground up," said NCAA Senior Vice-President Daniel Boggan. "Her work with Congress and within the higher education community has resulted in an increased understanding of the Association's efforts to represent more than 1,000 colleges, universities and conferences."

Boggan said the Association will launch an immediate search to replace Dixon. Daniel Nestel, assistant director of federal relations, will serve as interim director.

Dixon is leaving to become the president/CEO of VSA Arts (formerly known as Very Special Arts), a Washington, D.C., private, nonprofit association founded by Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith in 1976. The organization's mission is to promote and support arts programs for children with disabilities in the U.S. and abroad.
