NACDA names 10 finalists for inaugural McLendon awards

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics has selected 10 finalists for its inaugural John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards.

A NACDA selection committee will choose the final five winners, each of whom will receive a $10,000 grant to be used toward postgraduate studies.

The finalists are: Adebola Bamiduro, a political science major from Columbia University-Barnard College; Sheela Cabiling, a sports marketing major from Marshall University; Harvey Davis, an economics major from St. Mary's College (Maryland); Joseph Heskett, a speech communications major from Iowa State University; Teresa Jan, a sports management/communications major from the University of Michigan; Martin Jarmond, a communications studies major from the University of North Carolina, Wilmington; Jean Jeune, a sociology major from Florida State University; Stephanie Moss, a physical education major from North Carolina A&T State University; Cobey Shoji, a sports management/communications major from the University of Michigan; and Hajj Turner, a Pan-African studies major from the University of Louisville.

The five winners will receive their awards at NACDA's 36th annual convention June 10-13 in Salt Lake City.

The John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards are offered for minorities who intend to pursue a postgraduate degree in athletics administration. Nominees must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.000 (4.000 scale), have senior status and have demonstrated leadership qualities on an institutional or community level.

Funding for the scholarship program has been provided by adidas America; the American Football Coaches Association; the Eddie Robinson Football Classic; Host Communications, Inc.; Mellon Private Asset Management; the National Association of Basketball Coaches; the National Athletic Steering Committee; the National Basketball Association; Sears, Roebuck and Co.; Sports Media Association of Cleveland and Ohio; and NACDA.
