MINNEAPOLIS -- In the first NCAA Women's Frozen Four championship game, Minnesota-Duluth defeated St. Lawrence in a battle of teams with just six years of varsity experience combined.

The Bulldogs, in their second season, defeated the Saints, 4-2, at Mariucci Arena on the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, campus. The tournament was held March 23 and 25.

The turnout -- 3,079 for the final day and 5,178 for the Frozen Four -- was strong, which is a testament to the growing interest in women's ice hockey.

"I think it's a wonderful thing to see these two teams here," said Minnesota-Duluth coach Shannon Miller. "St. Lawrence is a few years removed from Division III, and we built our team from scratch. This shows it can be done and it can happen very quickly."

After playing the first period to a 1-1 standoff, Minnesota-Duluth peppered St. Lawrence with 13 shots, scoring twice to take a 3-1 lead to the final period. Maria Rooth, who scored three goals in the semifinals against Harvard, scored at 5:36 in the period. Hanne Sikio added another goal for the Bulldogs at 16:05.

Laurie Alexander boosted the Minnesota-Duluth lead to 4-1 with a third-period goal, all but sealing the title. The Saints' Isabelle Chartrand scored a power-play goal with 54 seconds remaining.

The gritty Saints played tough against the more experienced Bulldogs. In the end, Minnesota-Duluth's experience was too much to handle.

"We had hoped to establish our forecheck and keep our feet moving to create some space offensively," St. Lawrence coach Paul Flanagan said. "They did a good job of taking away many opportunities."

The Bulldogs (28-5-4) won their second national title in as many seasons. USA Hockey previously staged a college national championship, which Minnesota-Duluth won last year.

The Saints (24-8-3), in their fourth season at the Division I level, scored an upset of top-rated Dartmouth in the semifinals, defeating the Big Green, 3-1.

Rooth, a sophomore winger, was named the tournament's most outstanding player after scoring six points in the two victories. Rooth had a hat trick in the third period against Harvard and had two points in the title game.

Harvard defeated Dartmouth, 3-2, in the third-place game.

The event, which was hosted by Minnesota, drew positive reviews from the coaches and players involved.

"It's extremely big for me because this is the national championship," said Rooth. "You can't get any higher in college hockey. I rank this as high as being on the national team."

"I'm proud to have the first champion," said Miller, who also coached the Canadian national team to a silver medal in 1998. "This was the culmination of a lot of hard work and dedication by everyone in women's hockey. I am very proud."

Botterill claims Kazmaier award

Harvard's Jennifer Botterill was named the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award recipient during the Women's Frozen Four.

The award, presented by Texaco, is given annually to the women's intercollegiate ice hockey player who displays the highest standards of personal and team excellence during the season.

Botterill, a junior from Winnipeg, Manitoba, scored 41 goals and had 36 assists in the regular season. She was selected from a group of three finalists that included Courtney Kennedy from Minnesota and Botterill's teammate Tammy Shewchuk.

Botterill was twice named the Eastern College Athletic Conference player of the week, once after registering the game-winning goal in overtime to lead Harvard to the 2001 Beanpot Championship. She finished the season by being named the Ivy Group player of the year for the second straight season.

Botterill also is a member of the 2001 Canadian Women's National Team.

The Kazmaier award is named after the late Patty Kazmaier, who was a four-year letter-winner and all-Ivy honoree for the Princeton University women's ice hockey team from 1981-82 through 1985-86. An accomplished athlete who excelled in ice hockey, field hockey and lacrosse, Kazmaier died in 1990 at the age of 28 after a long battle with a rare blood disease.
