Fall sports championships previews -- Women's Cross Country

The NCAA News

Division I

Dates and sites: Regional qualifying at nine sites will be November 10. The championships will be November 19 at Furman.

Field: A total of 255 competitors will qualify or be selected.

Selection date: Thirteen teams and two individuals will be selected at large November 12.

2000 team champion: Colorado.

2000 individual champion: Kara Grgas-Wheeler (Colorado).

Top team contenders: Arizona State, Boston College, Brigham Young, Colorado, Georgetown, North Carolina State, Providence, Stanford.

Top individual contenders: Lisa Aguilera (Arizona State), Andreina Byrd (Arkansas), Tara Chaplin (Arizona), Lauren Fleshman (Stanford), Sara Gorton (Colorado), Sabrina Monro (Washington), Tara Northcutt (Brigham Young), Katie Sabino (North Carolina State).

Division II

Dates and sites: Regional qualifying at eight sites will be November 3 or 4. The championships will be November 17 at Slippery Rock.

Field: A total of 184 runners will compete.

Selection date: The 24 teams of seven individuals each and 16 additional individuals will be determined through regional competition.

2000 team champion: Western State.

2000 individual champion: Marjo Venalainen (Kennesaw State).

Top team contenders: Adams State, UC Davis, Central Missouri State, Edinboro, Grand Valley State, North Dakota, Western State, Western Washington.

Top individual contenders: Natalie Ewing (Grand Valley State), Heather Gibson (UC Davis), Zoila Gomez (Adams State), Rachel Harvey (Central Missouri State), Jessica Neva (North Dakota), Najeeby Quinn (Western State), Kristin Toney (Western State) Venalainen (Kennesaw State).

Division III

Dates and sites: Regional qualifying at eight sites will be November 10. The championships will be November 17 at Augustana (Illinois).

Field: A total of 215 runners will compete.

Selection date: The 24 teams of seven individuals and 47 additional individuals will be determined through regional competition.

2000 team champion: Middlebury.

2000 individual champion: Johanna Olson (Luther).

Top team contenders: Calvin, Luther, Middlebury, Moravian, College of New Jersey, Wartburg, Williams, Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Top individual contenders: Erinn Boot (Calvin), Dana Boyle (Puget Sound), Jessica Dober (Wisconsin-La Crosse), Alexandra Forte (Dickinson), Emily Korot (Middlebury), Becky Lebak (Wisconsin-Stevens Point), Olson (Luther), Heidi Wolfsberger (Moravian).
