Led by one-two finishes in a pair of weapons, St. John's (New York) won its first National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships team title March 22-25 at Wisconsin-Parkside.

The Red Storm collected 180 points for an eight-point victory over runner-up and six-time defending champion Penn State. Notre Dame had a five-year run of second-place finishes snapped after finishing third with 153 points.

"It's a great feeling," said St. John's head coach Yury Gelman. "It certainly wasn't easy, and we had to work very hard to get here, but it's worth it."

The St. John's men opened the championship by scoring 106 points in their two days of competition, led by Ivan Lee and Keeth Smart in the sabre. Smart won 22 of 23 bouts to finish first during the round-robin portion of the event. Lee captured 20 of 23 to place second.

Both Red Storm athletes won their semifinal bouts, and Lee won the title with a 15-13 defeat of Smart in the final. Smart, a two-time champion in the event, placed second.

Alex Roytblat and Joe Fisher also contributed to St. John's team effort by finishing fourth in the men's epée and foil, respectively.

The Red Storm led Notre Dame by 14 points after the men's events. The advantage shrank to eight points after the first of two days of women's competition.

"The women didn't fence very well on Saturday," Gelman said, "but they came back and did an excellent job Sunday.

"This was a total team effort and every fencer was a part of this win."

Emese Takács and Arlene Stevens made sure the Red Storm lead would stand up by claiming the top two spots in the women's epée. Takacs was third and Stevens fourth in the round-robin, and the two combined to score 31 points.

In the semifinals, Stevens edged round-robin winner Stephanie Eim of Penn State, 15-14, and Takács beat Northwestern's Kate Rudkin, 15-7. In the second all-St. John's final of the championships, Takács defeated her teammate, 15-13.

Marisa Mustilli came in second in the women's sabre for St. John's, which was runner-up to Penn State last year and in 1995.

Joining Lee and Takács as individual winners were Columbia's William Jed Dupree in the men's foil, Princeton's Soren Thompson in the men's epée, Yale's Sada Jacobson in the women's sabre and Stanford's Iris Zimmerman in the women's foil. Zimmerman went undefeated in her 23 round-robin bouts.
