TITLE IX -- Annual seminars covers range of related issues

The annual NCAA Title IX seminar, held May 16-17 in Indianapolis, introduced attendees to new ways of looking at Title IX compliance.

Seminar attendees heard a report on the NCAA Gender-Equity and Diversity Audit and also had the chance to attend new general sessions focusing on Title IX's impact on ethnic minority women and Title IX compliance in athletics health care and coaches' compensation.

A new concurrent session also examined the role of NCAA emerging sports in Title IX compliance. This year also marked the third annual presentation of the popular student-athlete panel.

FORMS -- Major NCAA membership forms to be submitted electronically

The NCAA sports sponsorship form, the institutional demographic form and the conference membership information form will be submitted electronically via NCAA Online (www.ncaa.org) for the 2000-01 academic year. Member institutions and conferences will not be receiving the forms through traditional mail.

A memorandum about the forms has been sent to directors of athletics and chief executive officers at each member institution and to the commissioner of each conference. The memorandum includes instructions on how to fill out the forms using the NCAA Web site. It also includes a user names and passwords for institutions and conferences.

The requested information must be submitted no later than August 15. Questions about the process can be directed to Pete Oliszczak, NCAA membership services representative, at 317/917-6003.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL -- Attendance jumps by 700,000 to approach nine million

National women's basketball attendance rose by nearly 700,000 as 8,697,712 spectators attended games during the 1999-00 season. Of that figure, 6,356,729 attended Division I games, the first time that total has exceeded six million.

For all three divisions, a total of 16 new NCAA schools helped increase attendance past the eight million mark for the second straight year. The first year for NCAA attendance tabulation was 1982, and overall attendance in the three divisions has increased every year since 1984.

The 315 Division I teams averaged a record 1,446 per game in home attendance, while total Division I attendance was up 529,365.

LEGISLATION

Membership proposals for 2001 Convention due by July 15

The deadline is approaching for Divisions II and III institutions and conferences to submit legislative proposals for the Association's 2001 Convention in Orlando.

The Divisions II and III deadline for membership-sponsored proposals is the same as in previous years. The deadline is 5 p.m. Central time, July 15 (July 15 falls on a Saturday this year).

In Division II, members are reminded of the amendment procedures set forth in NCAA Constitution 5.3 of the 1999-00 NCAA Division II Manual. In particular, the minimum number of active member institutions required to sponsor an amendment not sponsored by the NCAA Division II Presidents Council is 15.

In Division III, the membership is reminded of the amendment procedures set forth in Constitution 5.3 of the 1999-00 NCAA Division III Manual. The minimum number of active member institutions required to sponsor an amendment not sponsored by the NCAA Division III Presidents Council is eight.
