Marchionda chosen as head wrestling coach

Wisconsin-Oshkosh has appointed Larry Marchionda as head wrestling coach. He succeeds Phil Du Bois, who has led the program for the past three years.

Marchionda served as head wrestling coach and physical education teacher at Fond du Lac (Wisconsin) High School from 1968 until his retirement in 1999. During his tenure there, he captured a state championship in 1991 and won nine conference titles. The three-time state coach of the year has an overall 362-61 dual-meet record as a high-school head wrestling coach. Marchionda, an inductee into the Wisconsin Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame, formerly was an assistant coach at Winona State for one year.

A graduate of Winona State, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1966 and a master's degree in 1970, Marchionda was a two-time qualifier for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics wrestling championships.

Marks announced retirement plans, effective August 31, 2001 ... Michael Aiken, chancellor at Illinois, announced his retirement, effective August 20, 2001.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Michael Cancilla was appointed as athletics director at Montevallo. Cancilla has been associate athletics director at Iona since 1994 ... Evansville named Bob Gallman as interim director of athletics, replacing Laura Tietjen. Gallman has been vice-president for fiscal affairs and administration at the school for the past 14 years ... Hawaii-Hilo chose Edgar Torigoe as interim athletics director ... Lewis and Clark chose Richard Hanna as interim athletics director ... Tom Burman was named as athletics director at Portland State ... American hired Dan Radakovich as athletics director, effective October 1. Radakovich, who replaces Lee McElroy, has been associate athletics director at South Carolina since 1994.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATORS

Utica/Rome appointed Kelly Moore as senior woman administrator and head athletic trainer. Moore has been an athletic trainer at Herkimer County (New York) Community College ... Ginger Fulton was promoted to senior associate athletics director for administration/programs and senior woman administrator at Seton Hall. Fulton, who is entering her third year at the school, has been associate athletics director.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Manhattan promoted assistant athletics director Sandra Sapone to associate athletics director. Sapone will continue to work as senior woman administrator and compliance officer ... Ed Stoner was elevated to associate athletics director for business affairs at Massachusetts-Lowell. Stoner has been assistant athletics director for external affairs ... Cal Poly promoted Mike LaPlante to associate athletics director for advancement ... Todd Wyant accepted responsibilities as associate athletics director for student-athlete support services at Syracuse ... Seton Hall promoted Jimmy O'Donnell to associate athletics director for team operations, Patrick Elliott to associate athletics director for finance/operations and Keith Meyers to senior associate athletics director for marketing/operations. O'Donnell has been with the school for 12 years and Elliott has been with the school for 10 years, including the past five as assistant athletics director. Meyers has been with the school for 13 years and most recently was an associate athletics director.

John Secord assumed responsibilities as assistant athletics director for compliance at Coppin State. Secord has spent the past two years as director of compliance and education services at Towson ... Kevin Edick was elevated to assistant director of athletics at Utica/Rome. Edick has been a staff assistant at the school since 1988 and will retain head baseball coaching duties, which he has fulfilled since 1992 ... Drew Fraser was appointed as assistant athletics director for marketing at Brown ... Saint Leo's Tom O'Brien resigned as assistant athletics director for sports information/marketing to become sports information director at Merrimack. O'Dette has been pitching coach at Andrean (Indiana) High School for the past year and replaces Mike Moyzis, who became general manager for baseball operations of MLB's Chicago White Sox training centers ... Dan Palumbo resigned as head coach and intramural director at Ramapo ... Mark Salter accepted the interim head coaching job at Jackson State ... Christopher Newport selected John Harvell as head baseball coach and director of intramurals ... Guy Murray, head coach at Nebraska-Kearney, announced plans to retire after the 2001 season. Murray has guided the program since 1971.

Baseball assistants -- Ramapo's Rob Fisher, Derek Rosenfield and Jorge Hernandez resigned as assistants ... South Florida chose Nelson North as an assistant coach ... Austin Peay added Seth Kenny as an assistant coach ... Sam Russ was selected as an assistant coach and John Mullen was chosen as a volunteer assistant coach at Manhattan ... Mercyhurst named Jeff Benedict as an assistant. Benedict, who succeeds Matt Kirchoff, has been an assistant at the high-school level for the past two seasons ... Kevin O'Neill, head coach at Northwestern, stepped down to become an assistant with the NBA's New York Knicks. Northwestern selected Princeton head coach Bill Carmody as O'Neill's successor. Carmody has led Princeton's program for four years. John Thompson III was chosen as Carmody's replacement at Princeton. Thompson has served as an assistant at the school for five years ... Bob Knight was released as head coach at Indiana. In 29 seasons, Knight has captured three national championships and 11 Big Ten Conference titles ... Wingate hired Parker Laketa as head coach. Laketa, formerly an assistant coach at Notre Dame for seven seasons, has been executive director of the Illinois High School Athletic Hall of Fame ... Mike Davis was elevated to interim head coach at Indiana.

For the past two years, Haller has been an assistant at Gustavus Adolphus ... Shawn Lincoln was hired as head women's basketball and head women's soccer coach at Utica/Rome. Lincoln has been working in the Patriot League office ... Michael Eineker resigned as head coach at Bloomfield ... Michelle Collins was hired as head coach at Oswego State ... Tom Trefilek was hired as head coach at Dominican. Trefilek formerly guided the women's program at the school from 1987 to 1993.

Women's basketball assistants -- Southampton appointed Ken Moyers and Kelly Nelmes as assistant coaches ... North Carolina A&T added Angela Wells and Rodney Westmoreland as assistant coaches ... Kathy Lynch resigned after two seasons as an assistant coach at Canisius ... Anthony Staffiere was appointed as an assistant at LeMoyne ... Ramapo added Kathleen Finnegan as an assistant coach ... Men's and women's cross country -- Scott Jerome was hired as head men's and women's cross country and head men's and women's Nordic ski coach at Gustavus Adolphus. Jerome, who has been a graduate assistant women's cross country and men's and women's Nordic ski coach at Northern Michigan for the past three years, succeeds Karen Moeller as cross country coach and Larry Zelenz as ski coach. Zelenz will become an assistant with the team ... St. Michael's selected Zach Kramer as head men's coach ... Ramapo awarded interim cross country and track and field coaching duties to James McCuskers ... Jacksonville State chose Aimee Dawson as head women's cross country and track coach. Dawson has been men's and women's assistant track and field and cross country coach at Indiana State since 1998.

Men's and women's cross country assistants -- Candace Lebo was tabbed as an assistant coach at Lebanon Valley ... Coppin State hired Patrick Simms as an assistant cross country and track and field coach ... Dennis Sullivan was named as an assistant coach at Ramapo ... Leslie Mourmouras was chosen as men's and women's assistant coach at New England ... Wake Forest added Jennifer Hoppe as assistant women's cross country and track and field coach.

Equestrian -- Beth Horvath-Palmer accepted the interim head coaching post at Colby-Sawyer.

Field hockey -- Anne Perriello was chosen as head coach at Massachusetts-Lowell. Perriello, who replaces Amy Hassick, spent last season as an assistant and also will be the athletics department's director of purchasing.

Field hockey assistants -- St. Joseph's added Carolyn Meakim and Aislinn Richards as assistant coaches ... Wellesley hired Alexa Wilder as assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach. For the past year, Wilder has been school coaching officer at the English Lacrosse Association and the Royal High School in Bath, England ... Allison Blixt was named as an assistant at Hartwick.

Football -- Tom Holmoe, head coach at California, signed a one-year contract extension through 2002 ... Oklahoma extended the contract of head coach Bob Stoops through the 2005 season ... Don Strock was chosen as head coach at Florida International. The program is scheduled to begin competition in 2002. Strock, director of football operations at the school since 1999, played professionally in the NFL and coached in the Arena Football League, World League and the NFL.

Football assistants -- Lafayette named Keita Molloy as receivers coach ... Patrick Murphy was elevated to associate head coach at Massachusetts-Lowell. Murphy serves as recruiting coordinator, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. The school also chose Skip Bandini as defensive line coach, Matt Adamo as defensive backs coach, Bill Manchester as quarterbacks coach and Scott Richardson as outside linebackers coach ... Glidden, who succeeds Jerry Connolly, has worked as an assistant with the program for the past two years ... Oklahoma appointed Steve Nunno as co-head women's coach. Nunno will become head coach after the 2000-01 season.

Men's and women's gymnastics assistant -- Kris Buchheister accepted duties as associate women's coach at Northern Illinois.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistants -- Massachusetts-Lowell added Pertti Hasanen as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator to succeed Mark Taylor. The former Boston U. assistant coach most recently has been serving as head coach of SSI Vipiteno, an Italian Series A hockey team ... Ivan Moore was appointed as interim assistant men's coach at Rensselaer ... Maria Lewis assumed volunteer assistant women's coaching responsibilities at Mercyhurst. Lewis spent last year as an assistant at Maine ... Bradley Willner assumed assistant men's coaching responsibilities at St. Cloud State. Men's and women's lacrosse -- Limestone head men's coach Mike Cerino resigned. The school named Bill Milone as head men's coach ... Vinne Lang resigned after three seasons as head men's coach at Mercyhurst to accept a similar position at Wittenberg. Mercyhurst appointed two-year men's assistant coach Chris Ryan as Lang's successor ... Wentworth Institute added Paul Murphy as head men's coach. Murphy, who succeeds Aaron Koproski, teaches physical education at the middle-school level and formerly was head men's coach at Merrimack from 1988 to 1992 ... Jen Goff was promoted to head women's coach at Fredonia State. Goff, who replaces Sandy Jemison, will continue as head women's soccer coach at the school ... Cortland State hired Lelan Rogers as head men's coach. Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Kinsley O'Garrow was tabbed as women's assistant and Jarred Testa was added as men's assistant coach at UMBC. O'Garrow is a recent graduate of George Mason and Testa has been an assistant coach at Merchant Marine for two years ... Matt Rienzo was appointed as an assistant men's coach at Notre Dame ... Brian Brecht was appointed as an assistant men's coach at Rutgers ... Patrick Haley was awarded assistant men's coaching duties at Wentworth Institute.

Rifle -- Alaska Fairbanks hired David Johnson to succeed the retired Randy Pitney. Johnson, a former Olympian, has been an infantry captain with the United States Army. Pitney will continue as athletics director at the school.

Men's and women's rowing -- Craig Amerkhanian was chosen as head men's crew coach at Stanford. Since 1991, Amerkhanian has worked as associate head men's crew coach at California.

Men's and women's rowing assistant -- Veronika Platzer was awarded responsibilities as an assistant coach at Mercyhurst.

Men's and women's skiing -- Ryan Forsyth was elevated to first assistant/head men's and women's Alpine coach at Utah. Last year, Forsyth served as an assistant Alpine coach.

Men's soccer -- Fredonia State selected Patrick Gondek as head coach. Gondek has been an assistant at Plattsburgh State ... Utica/Rome named Robert Leary as head coach. Leary will continue as head men's lacrosse coach at the school and will assume additional responsibilities in sports information.

Men's soccer assistants -- Stephen Pickman was chosen as an assistant coach. Pickman succeeds David DeMello, who accepted assistant coaching duties at Providence ... Heidelberg appointed Andy Wheeler as an assistant coach. For the past six years, Wheeler has been director of operations for the Great Britain Buckeye Soccer Camp ... Fredonia State named James Hesch as an assistant coach ... Ramapo named D.J. Pinton as an assistant men's soccer coach and assistant volleyball coach ... Dan Dowling assumed assistant coaching duties at Misericordia ... St. Joseph's (Pennsylvania) appointed Chris Branscome and Jack Ruggero as assistant coaches ... Women's soccer assistants -- Jill Young was selected as an assistant coach at San Diego State ... Hector Cardona was hired as an assistant coach at Rhode Island College. Most recently, Cardona has been an assistant boys' varsity soccer coach at the high-school level ... Edwin Schieferstein assumed responsibilities as an assistant coach at Caldwell ... Hartwick named Catherine McEnroe as an assistant coach ... Marisa Karl was awarded duties as an assistant coach at New York Tech ... Wellesley hired Sharon Glick as an assistant. Men's and women's tennis -- Chuck McBreen was chosen as head women's coach at Ramapo ... Middle Tennessee State named Randy Holden as head women's coach ... David Zeutas-Broer was added as head men's and women's coach. Zeutas-Broer, who has spent the past 17 years as a teaching professional and coach, succeeds Jim Hayes ... Melvin Foreman was hired as head men's coach at Wayne State (Michigan) ... Ramapo selected Salma Goldstein as head men's coach ... Colby-Sawyer added Marty Perry as head men's and women's coach to succeed Jill Firstbrook. For the past two years, Perry has been an assistant men's coach at William and Mary ... Dickinson selected John Hartpence as head men's and women's coach. Most recently, Hartpence has been assistant cross country and track and field coach at Hamilton ... Stephen F. Austin head men's coach Phil Olson accepted additional duties as head women's coach.

The American Volleyball Coaches Association named Lindy A. Binns as executive director. Binns, who succeeds Sandra Vivas, has most recently been tournament director for the Chrysler-Plymouth Tournament of Champions and a project associate with the Sports Management Group.

Host Communications promoted Marc Kidd to president and chief operating officer, effective immediately. The organization also announced the promotion of Sam Dunn to executive vice-president. W. James Host will continue as chief executive officer.

CORRECTIONS

A graphic on page 2 of the August 30 issue of The NCAA News contained incorrect information about football playing surfaces in Division I-A football. For the 2000 season, the University of Nevada has switched from grass to an artificial surface.

Olympic distance runner Frank Shorter's college affiliation was incorrectly identified in a caption in the September 11 issue of The NCAA News. Shorter is a graduate of Yale University.

NOTABLES

Cheryl Levick, athletics director at Santa Clara since May, was chosen as NCAA Division I-A Administrator of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators. The NCAA Management Council member is being honored for accomplishments made during a 12-year stint as senior woman administrator and senior associate athletics director at Stanford. During her tenure there, the school captured 39 national championships, six Sears Cups and added three sports. Levick also chairs the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics.

Cedric Dempsey was selected as winner of the Outstanding College Football Executive award presented by the All-American Football Foundation. Dempsey's wife, June Dempsey, was chosen as recipient of the foundation's First Lady of Football award.

DEATHS

George Washington head volleyball coach Yvette Moorehead died August 16. Moorehead was 30.

Paul Pearson, former president at Miami (Ohio), died August 12. Pearson was 73.

Brenda Reilly, associate athletics director and former head women's basketball coach at Central Connecticut State, died August 5. Reilly was 62.

Former Harvard athletics director Robert B. Watson died August 12 at the age of 86. Watson also served as dean of students.

Jorge Heemsen, a junior member of the Rollins swimming team, was killed in a boating accident in Venezuela August 6. Heemsen posted a school record in the 50-meter freestyle and was a member of four record-setting relay teams.

Former Southern California football player Willard "Bubba" Scott died of cancer September 1. He was 53. Scott was a member of the 1968 national championship team that went 10-1 and the 1969 squad that completed the season with a 10-0-1 mark and won the Rose Bowl.

Lou McCullough, former Trans America Athletic Conference commissioner, died September 8. McCullough, who led the conference from 1983 to 1991, coached football at Wofford, Wyoming, Indiana, Iowa State and Ohio State. He also was athletics director at Iowa State for 12 years.
