Edwards to retire after 2000 football season

LaVell Edwards, head football coach at Brigham Young, has announced plans to retire at the end of the 2000 season.

Edwards came to Brigham Young as an assistant coach in 1962. He was elevated from defensive coordinator to head coach in 1972. In 28 seasons, Edwards, who has had only one losing season, has captured 20 conference championships and has made 22 bowl game appearances. Brigham Young completed a 13-0 season in 1984 to earn a national championship. That same season, Edwards was recognized as national coach of the year. The seven-time Western Athletic Conference coach of the year is seventh among the winningest head coaches in college football history, with a 251-96-3 record.

Edwards was an all-conference football player at Utah State before graduating in 1952.

Mansfield chose Kristen Falk as senior woman administrator and assistant athletics director. Falk has been senior woman administrator at Wisconsin-Superior.

Kara Brennan was elevated to associate athletics director at Iona ... Tulane named Scott Sidwell as associate athletics director for corporate development ... Carolyn O'Connell and Tom Hitcho were appointed as senior associate athletics directors at Loyola (Illinois). O'Connell has been with the school for 21 years and also serves as senior woman administrator. Hitcho has been with the school for 24 years and also works as head athletic trainer ... Rosemary Shea was elevated to associate athletics director for administration of men's sports and compliance at Holy Cross. Shea has been with the school for 14 years and has worked as an assistant athletics director for compliance since 1995 ... Michigan State chose Richard Bader as associate athletics director and men's assistant basketball coach ... Le Moyne hired Jeanne Dupree as head coach to succeed Tom Cooney, who retired after 17 years as head coach. Dupree has been head coach at Misericordia for two seasons.

Ericksen most recently has been an assistant men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at Cal State Stanislaus ... Karla Sanford was awarded head men's and women's coaching duties at Mount Olive ... Brian Gawne was named as head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at Brockport State ... Lord was head coach at Kingswood Regional (New Hampshire) High School from 1980 to 1999 and closed her tenure there with a 244-52-34 mark ... Massachusetts-Lowell chose Anne Perriello as head coach ... Sandra Hemming was added as head coach at Siena ... St. Francis (Pennsylvania) named Martin Romeril as head women's field hockey and lacrosse coach.

Christopher Newport appointed Rob Lussenhop as head coach ... Bryce Wallor was selected as head coach at Connecticut ... Ohio Northern chose Eric Westerfield as head women's golf coach and football defensive line coach. Westerfield fulfilled duties as defensive line coach, special teams coordinator and strength and conditioning coach at Methodist from 1992 to 1999 ... Patrick Mashuda accepted responsibilities as head men's and women's golf coach and assistant men's basketball coach at Penn State-Behrend. Succeeding Karl Radday, Mashuda has been an assistant men's basketball coach at La Roche for seven seasons and assistant golf coach for three seasons ... Roger Kollmansberger was chosen as head golf coach and assistant facilities manager for the physical education building at St. Andrews Presbyterian. Kollmansberger, who succeeds Chip Wells, has been head basketball coach at Faith Christian Academy in Pennsylvania ... College of New Jersey chose Gary Roberts as head men's coach. Roberts succeeds Fred Oshel, who led the program for 26 seasons. Roberts most recently has coached at the high-school level ... Reggie Grant was selected as head coach at Southern Maine ... Men's and women's golf assistants -- David Horne was appointed as an assistant coach at Greensboro ... Bradley hired John Ehrgott as an assistant. Ehrgott replaces Jeff Roche ... Charles T. Gallagher was selected as an assistant coach at College of New Jersey ... Knox named George Burgland as assistant women's coach.

Men's and women's gymnastics -- Jill Hirsch resigned as head coach at Centenary.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Wisconsin's Julie Sasner resigned as head women's coach to become an assistant coach for the women's Olympic and National Teams. The school chose Trina Bourget as interim head coach.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistants -- Jaime Totten was awarded responsibilities as women's assistant coach at Connecticut ... Ryan Stone was selected as an assistant women's coach at Brown. Stone has been head women's coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic for five years ... Norm McCauley was hired as an assistant at Miami (Ohio). McCauley, who replaces Joe Bonnet, most recently was a consultant with the Ontario Hockey League ... Jonathan Deptula assumed duties as assistant men's coach at Wentworth Institute.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Boston College named Shari Krasnoo as head women's coach ... Dave Carty was appointed as head men's coach at Fairleigh Dickinson ... Saint Anselm's Shannon O'Neil resigned as head women's coach to become head women's coach at Villanova ... Scott Marr was selected as head men's coach at Albany (New York). For the past six years, Marr has been men's assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Maryland ... Stanford hired Michele Uhlfelder as head women's coach. Uhlfelder, a member of the U.S. Lacrosse National Team since 1991, spent 1999 and 2000 as associate head coach at Duke.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Mike Spinner resigned as an assistant men's coach at Manhattanville to assume a similar post at Salisbury State ... Dan Campbell was selected as part-time assistant men's coach at Eastern Connecticut State ... Brown appointed Liz Robertshaw as an assistant women's coach. For the past two seasons, Robertshaw has been an assistant women's coach at George Mason ... Pfeiffer added Brian Anken and Brian McKee as assistant coaches and Ben Esposito as volunteer assistant coach ... Christin Mastro was appointed as an assistant women's coach at Brown ... Men's and women's sailing -- Southern Maine appointed Robert Haile as head coach.

Men's soccer -- UC Riverside hired Nat Gonzalez as head coach. The program is scheduled to begin competition during the 2001-02 academic year. Gonzalez has been an assistant at Washington since 1996 ... Mark Johnson was chosen as head coach at Huntingdon ... Dominican (New York) named Michael Swanwick as men's soccer coach ... Rudy Pompert accepted duties as head coach at Buffalo State. Pompert was head women's coach at the school for three seasons ... Graham Stafford was hired as head coach at Emerson.

The Peach Belt Conference selected Rosemary DePaolo, president at GC & SU, as president for the 2000-01 academic year. The conference also chose Anne H. Hopkins, president at North Florida, as president-elect and Frank D. Brown, president at Columbus State, as vice-president.

David Youngers was appointed as media relations assistant at the Mid-American Conference. Youngers is a May 2000 graduate of John Carroll.

Conference USA hired Roscelle Bullock as information services assistant.

The Big 12 Conference selected Lori Ebihara as assistant commissioner for compliance and Kim Anderson as assistant commissioner for basketball operations.

Traci Hay was chosen as publicist for the State University of New York Athletic Conference.

The Mountain West Conference named Bob Burda as assistant commissioner for communications, effective September 18. Burda has been assistant athletics director for communications at Miami (Florida).

ASSOCIATIONS

Willis Wilson was appointed to the board of directors of the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

The United States Olympic Committee promoted Jeff Howard to associate director, media and public relations. Howard, who replaces Darryl Seibel, has been with the organization since November 1999.

The date of the National Letter of Intent (NLI) early signing period for women's volleyball was listed incorrectly in the Legislative assistance column of the August 28 issue of The NCAA News. The NLI early signing period for women's volleyball will be November 8 through November 15, and the late period will be April 11, 2001, through August 1, 2001.

Two stories regarding the Ethnic Minority and Women's Enhancement Program postgraduate scholarship winners that were published in the August 14 and August 28 issues of The NCAA News contained incorrect information. There were 12 scholarship winners in each category and three alternates instead of 15 winners as stated in the stories. The alternates for the Ethnic Minority Enhancement Program scholarships are Gerard Coles of Springfield College, Shellyann Hamilton of the State University of New York at Buffalo and Tanya Bolden of the University of Mississippi. The Women's Enhancement Program alternates are Caroline Townsend of Northern Illinois University, Taryn Brackin of Ursinus College and Lauren Mackey of Morehead State University.

DEATHS

Former Case Western Reserve head men's basketball coach Bill Sudeck died of cancer August 23. Sudeck, 74, coached 29 years at Case Western Reserve and eight years at Case Institute of Technology. He also coached track and cross country.

Former Northern Illinois basketball player Benny Westlake died August 17 at the age of 87. Westlake played forward from 1931 to 1935 and was inducted into the school's hall of fame as an individual in 1978. He also was inducted in 1984 as a member of the 1933-34 Little 19 Conference championship team.
