Lisella accepts head coaching post at Rowan

Rowan has appointed Gabrielle Lisella as head women's basketball coach. Lisella succeeds Candace Crabtree.

For the past five seasons, Lisella has guided the women's basketball program and served as assistant athletics director at Oswego State. During the 1999 season, Lisella's team established a school record for wins in a season with a 14-11 mark, earning Lisella recognition as the State University of New York Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.

Before coming to Oswego State, Lisella was head women's basketball, assistant softball and assistant soccer coach at Sewanee (University of the South) from 1991 to 1995. She also worked as head volleyball coach and interim head women's basketball coach at St. Lawrence and served as junior varsity women's basketball and assistant lacrosse coach at Cortland State in 1989-90.

Lisella is a 1985 graduate of East Stroudsburg, where she earned a bachelor's degree in health and physical education. She also competed in basketball and volleyball. Lisella earned a master's degree in physical education from Cortland State.

William Bailey was appointed as faculty athletics representative at Belmont. Bailey has been a professor of psychology at the school since 1986.

Men's and women's rowing assistant -- Mark Davis accepted the women's assistant rowing coach position at Texas, effective August 18. Davis, who replaces Rachel McCallie, spent the last four years as head men's and women's rowing coach and assistant men's and women's swimming coach at Colby.

Men's and women's skiing assistant -- Utah hired Ryan Forsyth as an assistant coach for Alpine events.

Men's soccer -- Todd Bramble accepted the head coaching post at Butler. Bramble has been head assistant coach at Clemson for five seasons ... Maine promoted Travers Evans to head coach. Evans, who succeeds Scott Atherley, has been an assistant with the program since 1996. Atherley will continue at the school as director of soccer and head women's soccer coach ... CONFERENCES

The Old Dominion Athletic Conference appointed Stacy Weston as sports information director.

Jim Naumovich was named as commissioner of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Naumovich, who has served as athletics director at Quincy since 1992, succeeds Carl McAloose.

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference selected Samuel F. Hulbert, president at Rose-Hulman, as chairman of the conference's board of directors for the 2000-01 academic year. The conference also chose John R. Brazil, president at Trinity (Texas) and William E. Trout, president at Rhodes, as members of the executive committee. Gregory K. Ruark, athletics director and head soccer coach at Rose-Hulman, was named as chairman of the conference's athletics directors council. D. Dwayne Hanberry was promoted to assistant commissioner for communications after serving as sports information director since 1995.

The Sun Belt Conference selected Phyllis Mohrman as director of marketing. The conference also has announced the following individuals as officers for the 2000-01 academic year: Gregory St. L. The California Collegiate Athletic Association Commissioner Robert J. Hiegert was awarded a one-year contract extension through the 2002-03 academic year, and Bill White was reappointed as coordinator of officiating for 2000-01. Hiegert is entering his fourth year as commissioner. Additionally, Joe Lang was elevated to assistant commissioner for the 2000-01 academic year. Monica Heuer also was appointed as the conference's first full-time coordinator of compliance and internal operations.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Rick Kindhart was hired as statistics coordinator at the national office. Kindhart has been communications director for the Missouri State High School Activities Association.

Frank Losquadro resigned as assistant director of broadcast services at the NCAA national office.

Liz Muir, a membership services representative II, resigned.

The National Association of Academic Advisors chose Curt Fludd, senior assistant athletics director for student life at Texas, as president-elect. Fludd has been a member of the organization for 21 years, including serving as national vice-president.

CORRECTIONS

One of the student-athlete summaries in the postgraduate scholarship story in the July 31 issue of The NCAA News contained incorrect information. The summary for Michael G. Berner should have stated that he was a member of St. Lawrence University's 1999 Division III Men's Soccer Championship team.

Illinois Wesleyan University basketball player Korey Coon's last name was misspelled in the headline and caption of the GTE Team Member of the Year story in the July 31 issue of The NCAA News. Coon and Marshall University's Chad Pennington were named Team Members of the Year, GTE's highest academic honor.

REPRIMANDS

The NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Committee has reprimanded Missouri Southern State College assistant coaches Chris Lowery and Paul Lusk for inappropriate behavior during the 2000 NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship.

Specifically, Lowery and Lusk confronted the game officials in an unprofessional manner following the semifinal contest held in Louisville, Kentucky.

The committee has issued a public reprimand of Lowery and Lusk. Additionally, the committee will withhold both coaches' per diem.

NOTABLES

Carolijn van Rossum and Tom Hand were named as winners of the 2000 Tennis Magazine/Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. Van Rossum competed at William and Mary and Hand played at LSU.

DEATHS

Anthony Bates, a football player at Kansas State, was killed in an automobile accident July 31. He was 20. Bates, a management information systems major, redshirted last season.
