Crowley announces retirement plans

Joseph N. Crowley, president at Nevada, has announced plans to retire, effective December 31. From 1993 to 1995, Crowley served as president of the NCAA and is the only person to fulfill concurrent terms on the NCAA Council and Presidents Commission.

Crowley joined Nevada as a political science instructor for a one-semester temporary term in 1966. He went on to complete stints as an assistant, associate and full professor and chairman of the faculty senate before being selected as acting president in 1978. Crowley became full-time president March 23, 1979.

A 1959 graduate of Iowa, where he obtained a degree in political science, Crowley earned his master's degree in social science in 1963 from Fresno State and his doctorate in political science in 1967 from Washington.

Mitchell M. Zais was appointed president at Newberry, effective in August. Zais has been chief of staff of the U.S. Army Reserve Command in Atlanta ... Pace President Patricia O'Donnell Ewers announced retirement plans, effective July 15 ... Donald W. Harward announced his retirement as president at Bates, effective in 2002 ... Midwestern State selected Henry Moon as president, effective September 1. Moon has been provost and vice-president for undergraduate and graduate education at Toledo ... Central Michigan chose Michael Rao as president, effective August 1.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Willamette athletics director Bill Trenbeath announced retirement plans, effective upon the selection of a successor. Trenbeath has been with the athletics program since 1973 and has served as athletics director since 1988 ... Joy Richman was hired as athletics director at East Stroudsburg, effective July 3, to replace Earl W. Edwards. Most recently, Richman has been director of sport management, physical education and athletics at Allentown ... Florida Southern chose Mike Roberts as director of athletics, succeeding the retiring Hal Smeltzly. Roberts has been assistant athletics director and head baseball coach at North Carolina-Asheville ... Val Belmonte was appointed director of athletics at Union, effective July 10. Succeeding Dick Sakala, Belmonte joins the athletics department from USA Hockey, where he has been director of the coaching program since 1991 ... Maryland Eastern Shore appointed Vivian L. Fuller as director of athletics. From 1997 to 1999, Fuller served as director of intercollegiate athletics at Tennessee State and formerly held the same position at Northeastern Illinois ... Scott Burnam succeeds Steve Clark as athletics director at Wesley, effective July 1. Clark will become the school's director of international programs ... Tom Bowen resigned after two months as acting athletics director at Saint Mary's (California) to become a member of the athletics development department at California. Bowen has been associate athletics director for three years ... Rick Mello was appointed as director of athletics at Florida International. Mello, who succeeds Orville M. Henry, has been athletics director at Arkansas-Little Rock for five years ... Lon Boike was appointed as athletics director at Minnesota-Crookston to succeed Brad Kerr, who resigned. Boike has served as athletics director at Clarke since 1993 ... Central Arkansas selected William E. Lide as athletics director ... Paul R. Moyer was hired as athletics director at Moravian, effective July 17. For the past six years, Moyer has been director of athletics and recreation at St. Mary's (Maryland) ... Springfield appointed Cathie Schweitzer as director of athletics, effective July 17 ... Kevin Grimmer was appointed interim director of athletics at Utica/Rome to replace James Klein, who retired. Grimmer has been assistant athletics director at the school since 1985.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATORS

Birmingham Southern promoted Leslie Claybrook to senior woman administrator/
associate athletics director. Claybrook will continue as compliance officer and assume assistant coaching duties with the school's new air rifle program ... Carmen Nelon was hired as assistant athletics director for compliance and student-athlete services and senior woman administrator. From 1995 to 1999, Nelon was head women's basketball coach and senior woman administrator at South Carolina-Spartanburg ... Texas-San Antonio awarded Elizabeth Dalton the position of associate athletics director/senior woman administrator. Dalton has been football administrator at Notre Dame since 1997.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE

Evansville named Davies Bellamy as faculty athletics representative to succeed J. Robert Knott, who retired from the position after 23 years.

Judy Devine, associate athletics director at Kent, announced retirement plans, effective June 30. Devine has been with the athletics department for 31 years and has completed stints as women's basketball and field hockey coach, assistant athletics director and associate athletics director ... South Carolina selected Craig Curry as associate athletics director and interim NCAA compliance coordinator ... Loyola Marymount's Pam Wettig resigned as associate athletics director ... Quinnipiac elevated Amanda Long-Backus to associate athletics director for compliance and student services. Long-Backus, who also is senior woman administrator, has been assistant director of athletics for compliance and student services since January 1999 ... Massachusetts-Boston promoted Pat Burns to associate athletics director. Burns, who joined the athletics department as athletics business manager in 1988, has been assistant athletics director for business and operations since 1991 ... Men's and women's ice hockey -- Jim Hunt was selected as head men's coach at Fairfield ... Wisconsin-Eau Claire appointed Mike Collins as head women's coach. The program will assume varsity status for the 2000-01 academic year. Collins spent the past year as head coach of the San Angelo Outlaws of the Western Professional Hockey League.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistant -- Mark Strobel accepted duties as men's assistant coach at Minnesota-Duluth.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Cornell promoted Jeff Tambroni to head men's coach to replace Dave Pietramala. Tambroni has been with the program as an assistant for the past three years ... Aaron Koproski resigned after one season as head men's coach at Wentworth Institute. Koproski joined the program as top assistant in 1998 ... Widener selected Jamie Steele as head men's coach. Steele has been an assistant coach at Gettysburg since 1996 and defensive coordinator with the program since 1997.

Rowing -- Joan O'Hara was hired as head women's coach at Wellesley. The former member of the United States Rowing National Team has been head coach of the ZLAC Master's Rowing Club in San Diego.

Men's soccer -- Hunter appointed John Benintendo as head coach to succeed Cesar Markovic. Since the fall of 1999, Benintendo has been an assistant with the school ... Stephen Starr was added as head coach at Nichols. Starr replaces Mark Wagner, who will continue as an assistant with the squad ... Alma chose Jeff Bateson as interim head coach. Bateson, who succeeds Scott Frey, has been an assistant with the school for two years ... Skidmore selected Ron McEachen as head coach ... Elmira hired Brandon Bowman as head coach to replace Steve McCall. Bowman has been an assistant men's and women's coach at Miami (Ohio).

Women's soccer -- Southern Oregon appointed Jose Chavez as head coach ... Leigh Sears accepted the position of head coach at Hope. Sears has led the women's soccer program at Marietta since 1994 ... Jeff Mitchell was hired as head coach at Bemidji State ... Misericordia added Mark Stauffer as head coach and intramural director.

Women's soccer assistant -- David Coulter was awarded duties as an assistant coach at Hilbert.

Softball -- Missouri Southern added Ron Faubion as head coach ... James Gravelle was named as head coach at Southern Oregon ... St. Thomas (Minnesota) appointed John Tschida as head coach to replace interim head coach Wendy Miller. Tschida, who has been assistant baseball coach for four years and head softball coach for six years at St. Mary's (Minnesota), led St. Mary's to the 2000 Division III Softball Championship ... Melissa McCaughey succeeds Cindy Manley as head coach at Texas Lutheran. McCaughey has been head softball coach since 1998 and senior woman administrator at MacMurray ... Lu Harris resigned as head coach at Southern Mississippi to become head coach at Georgia. Harris has led the squad since January 1998 ... Tom Creola accepted head coaching duties at Erskine ... Men's and women's track and field -- Dallas awarded additional duties as head men's and women's coach to Julie Felderhoff, who also is head women's basketball coach at the school. Felderhoff succeeds Harry Hall, who will continue as head cross country coach and as an assistant during the 2001 track season ... Geoff Masanet was selected as head track and field coach at Missouri-Kansas City. Since January of 1997, Masanet has been head cross country and assistant track coach at the school and has been interim head track coach since January ... Wyoming chose Don Yentes as head coach ... Boise State awarded head coaching responsibilities to Mike Maynard ... Matt Henry was chosen as head coach at New Mexico ... Wrestling assistant -- Upper Iowa chose Nate Skaar as an assistant. For three years, Skaar has been head wrestling coach at the Newport-Mesa Unified School District in Costa Mesa, California.

Academic services -- Harold White retired as athletics department academic support administrator at South Carolina. The school selected Tom Perry as White's successor.

Athletics communications -- Bucknell chose Ryan Erb as athletics communications intern ... Patrick Gillespie resigned as director of athletics communications at Cornell to accept a position as sports producer for the northeast region for ihigh.com. Development -- Michelle McBride was elevated to associate director and Cynthia Oxley and Steve Moeller were appointed as assistant directors of University of Cincinnati Athletic Team Scholarships ... Northern Illinois hired Joe Coots as director of development. For the past year, Coots has been associate director of development at William and Mary.

Marketing assistants -- Wendy Best and Ben Chulick were added as marketing assistants at UNLV.

Media relations -- Texas Christian chose Steve Fink as director of athletics media relations.

Sports information -- West Texas A&M sports information director Bill Kauffman resigned to become director of communications at the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Kauffman has been sports information director with the school for the past six years ... Bob Casey accepted sports information director and assistant football coaching responsibilities at Wesley. Casey fulfilled similar duties at Huron University in South Dakota ... Tom Schott was promoted to sports information director at Purdue. Schott has been associate sports information director ... Concordia (Wisconsin) added Chuck Oliver as sports information director ... Alan Wickstrom was added as sports information director at Massachusetts-Boston. For the past two years, Wickstrom has been manager of publications at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

Sports information assistants -- David O'Brian was chosen as assistant sports information director at Binghamton. For the past five years, O'Brian has been a member of the athletics media relations office at Maryland ... Cincinnati named Jill Warren as assistant sports information director. Most recently, Warren was associate sports information director at Southern Illinois ... Purdue associate sports information director Andrew Punzal resigned to become a senior account manager with Campbell and Company. The school announced the hiring of Anthony Greco and Laura Schwenk as sports information assistants ... Jason Shay accepted additional duties as assistant sports information director at Mercyhurst, effective July 1. Shay will continue to work as an assistant men's basketball coach at the school ... UNLV hired Kevin Force as assistant sports information director ... Texas A&M-Kingsville announced the selection of Craig Merriman as assistant sports information director. Merriman has served in the same position at Texas-San Antonio for the last two years.

Ticket operations -- Robert Norton was hired as athletics ticket manager at Appalachian State ... Meredith Breen was chosen as ticketing coordinator at UNLV ... Tracy Spencer was appointed as athletics ticket manager at San Jose State. During the 1999-00 school year, Spencer served as assistant ticket manager at Tulsa.

CONFERENCES

The Mid-Continent Conference added Tony Hamilton as assistant director of media relations, effective July 3. For the past two years, Hamilton has been assistant sports information director at Butler. The conference also announced that Gerald Bepko, chancellor at Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis, has been elected as chair of the Mid-Continent Conference Presidents Council, succeeding Donald Spencer, president at Western Illinois. Mike Moore, athletics director at Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis, will serve as chair of the conference's Directors Council and William Kulsrud, faculty athletics representative at the school, will chair the Faculty Athletics Representatives Council for the 2000-01 academic year.

The West Coast Conference elevated Don Ott and Teresa Kuehn to associate commissioners and promoted Valerie Richardson to assistant commissioner. The conference also added Brad Walker as director of communications and selected Kim Hay as championships and marketing assistant. In addition, the following conference officers were elected: Lane Bove, Loyola Marymount, president; Ken Anderson, Gonzaga, vice-president; Carmen Jordan-Cox, San Francisco, treasurer.

The State University of New York Athletic Conference chose Jim Zalacca as president. Zalacca, athletics director at New Paltz State, has been president-elect and chair of the finance committee for the past year.

Jeffrey L. Ligney assumed duties as director of media relations at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Ligney most recently has been a student assistant sports information director at Saginaw Valley State.

The following officers have been elected to the Lone Star Conference executive committee for 2000-01: Don Davis, Cameron, chair; James Hindman, Angelo State, vice-chair; Joe Anna Hibler, Southwestern Oklahoma State, second vice-chair; Keith McFarland, Texas A&M-Commerce, third vice-chair.

The American Southwest Conference announced the election of the following individuals to the 2000-01 executive committee: Rick Niece, Ozarks (Arkansas), president; Oscar Page, Austin, vice-president; Howell Todd, Mississippi College, past president.

The National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators chose the following individuals as recipients of the NACMA Postgraduate Scholarship Awards for 1999-00: Sara Atalla, Missouri-Kansas City; Stefanie Kelly, North Dakota State; Mark Muhlhauser, Washington; Eric Olsavsky, Ohio State; and Jeffrey Simon, Central Michigan. Each student will be awarded a $1,000 grant to pursue a graduate degree in athletics administration with the intention of pursuing a career in sports marketing.

Jenna Daniels and Charles Howell were named as Rolex College Golfers of the Month for May. Daniels, a senior at Arizona, won the individual title at the Division I women's national championship. Howell, a junior at Oklahoma State, captured the Division I individual men's national championship.

The College Golf Foundation and Rolex Watch U.S.A. chose William B. Greene Jr. and Joan Garety as winners of the Rolex Achievement award presented to former varsity collegiate golfers who have achieved excellence in their careers. Greene, who competed on the varsity golf team at Wake Forest for three years, is cofounder of the Bank of Tennessee in Kingsport, Tennessee, and Paragon Bank in Raleigh, North Carolina. Garety, who currently works at the privately held retailer Meijer, Inc., playing a significant role in obtaining long-term debt financing, was a four-year letterwinner and two time co-captain at Michigan State.

The National Collegiate Collegiate Licensing Association chose the Collegiate Licensing Company as winner of the corporate Service award and chose Arizona as winner of the Synergy award for collegiate licensing program of the year. The organization also elected Bill Battle with the Collegiate Licensing Company and Alabama's Finus Gaston to the NCLA Hall of Fame.

Lew Perkins, athletics director at Connecticut, was chosen as the inaugural winner of the Street and Smith's SportsBusiness Journal National Athletics Director of the Year award. Perkins has led the athletics programs at Connecticut since July 1990.

Mitch Hanson, head softball coach at North Dakota State, and assistant coaches Darren Mueller and Mike McLeod have been named the 2000 Speedline/NFCA Division II National Coaching Staff of the Year in softball. North Dakota State captured its first Division II championship this year. Roanoke head softball coach Allen Bayse and assistant coaches Mike Walthall and Patti Sheedy were selected as coaching staff of the year in Division III. The trio guided the team to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship and a fifth-place finish in the Division III tournament.

DEATHS

Appalachian State basketball student-athlete Rufus Leach drowned while boating in Tennessee. He was 22. Last season, as a senior, Leach led the squad in scoring and set a school record with 100 three-point baskets.

Former Arkansas basketball player Larry Marks died of an apparent heart attack. He was 33. Marks started 52 games for Arkansas from 1987 to 1990.

Former Tennessee football player Charles A. "Chan" Caldwell, died June 14 of kidney failure. Caldwell played freshman football at Tennessee in 1941, joined the Navy during World War II and returned to the school in 1945 to letter three seasons. He also served as an assistant coach with the team from 1949 to 1954 in addition to spending one season as head coach of the Canadian Football League's Ottawa Rough Riders.

Sandy Stephens, the first black all-America quarterback, died June 6 at the age of 59. Stephens led Minnesota to the national championship in 1960 and a Rose Bowl victory the following season.

Former Grambling assistant football coach Fred Collins died June 6. He was 60.

Thomas H. McGrath, former president at Sonoma State, died May 26 at the age of 82.

Former Wisconsin-Stout President and Chancellor William J. Micheels died June 9.

Arthur E. Reichle Jr., former head baseball coach at UCLA, died May 23. Reichle was 86.

S. Walter Martin, former president at Valdosta State and Emory, died June 2. Martin was 89.

Clayton Brooks, a former coach and athletic trainer at Redlands, died June 19. Brooks coached track and field, cross country and was an assistant football coach. He also worked as a physical education professor and athletic trainer throughout his tenure with the school.
