Grant steps down as women's AD at Iowa

Currently, Grant holds positions on the NCAA Division I Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet and the cabinet's Subcommittee on Amateurism and Agents. She has served as women's athletics director at Iowa since the department's establishment in 1973. Grant coached and played field hockey in Scotland and Canada before coming to Iowa in 1969.

A founding member of the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, she fulfilled president-elect, president and past-president duties with the organization from 1979 to 1982. Grant also was a member of the board of directors for the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators and served as president from 1987 to 1989.

A native of Scotland, Grant graduated from Dunfermline College of Physical Education in 1956 before earning a bachelor's degree in physical education from Iowa in 1969. She also earned a master's degree and doctorate in sports administration from Iowa.

Frank Pergolizzi was chosen as director of athletics at Southeastern Louisiana to succeed interim athletics director Richard Sharp. Since 1998, Pergolizzi has been athletics director at East Tennessee State ... Karla K. Gavin was promoted to athletics director at Upper Iowa, replacing Paul Rudolph. Gavin has been with the school for eight years and most recently has been athletics media relations director/senior woman administrator ... Coastal Carolina athletics director Dave Blank resigned to become athletics director at Drake ... Dixon Farmer was chosen as athletics director at Occidental ... Washington State appointed Jim Sterk as athletics director ... Wingate named Doreen McAfee as athletics director. Replacing Beth L. Murray, McAfee most recently has served as president of National Scholarship Consultants ... St. Scholastica promoted Dana Moore to athletics director to replace James Datka. Moore also has been head volleyball coach since 1997 and will retain coaching responsibilities ... North Carolina-Asheville appointed Joni Comstock as athletics director. Comstock succeeds Tom Hunnicutt, who retired. For the past three years, Comstock has been senior associate athletics director at Purdue.

Risa Ott was chosen as assistant athletics director for compliance and academics/
senior woman administrator at Pace. Ott most recently was an intern in the school's athletics department and formerly worked at the Women's Sports Foundation.

Liz Abel was promoted to assistant athletics director for sports information at Utah. Abel has been with the school since 1983 and most recently has been sports information director ... Clemson appointed Eric Baumgartner as assistant athletics director for NCAA compliance ... Dave Fontaine was promoted to assistant athletics director at Utica. Fontaine will continue as intramural director and head softball coach ... GC&SU assistant athletics director Duward Whelchel resigned to accept a position in business in Atlanta. UC Irvine hired John Savage as head coach. The program is scheduled to be reinstated during the 2001-02 academic year and compete in the spring of 2002. Mike Brey, head coach at Delaware, signed a five-year contract extension through the 2006-07 season ... Ed Conroy, head coach at Francis Marion, resigned to become director of men's basketball operations at Tulsa. In three seasons at Francis Marion, Conroy compiled a 41-40 record ... North Carolina's Bill Guthridge retired after three seasons as head coach and 30 seasons as an assistant. Guthridge led squads to Final Four appearances in two of his three seasons as head coach ... David Paulsen succeeded Harry C. Sheehy as head coach at Williams. For the past three years, Paulsen has been guiding the program at Le Moyne ... Field hockey assistant -- Lisa Kadien was hired as an assistant coach at Cornell. For the past year, Kadien has been athletics director, head field hockey and head lacrosse coach at Foxcroft School in Middleburg, Virginia.

Football -- McNeese State elevated Tommy Tate to head coach, replacing Kirby Bruchhaus. Tate, who was assistant head coach and defensive coordinator last year, has fulfilled duties as interim head coach since June 6 ... Lloyd Carr, head coach at Michigan, was awarded a contract extension through the 2005 season. Carr begins his sixth season as head coach ... UNLV head coach John Robinson signed a contract extension through the 2002 season.

Football assistants -- DePauw appointed Jeff McMartin as an assistant football and track coach and named Neil Kazmierczak as assistant football coach and strength and conditioning coordinator ... Bill Young accepted the position of assistant coach at Greensboro ... Louisiana Tech chose Randy Bates as defensive backs coach, Todd Howard as linebackers coach, Todd Monken as running backs coach and recruiting coordinator, Pete Perot as offensive line coach and Rob Spence as quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator ... Tim Tibesar was added as an assistant at Cornell. For the past year, Tibesar has served as offensive line coach at California ... Men's and women's lacrosse -- Bill Dirrigl was hired as head men's coach at Rutgers to succeed Tom Hayes. Dirrigl has been an assistant at Loyola (Maryland) for the eight seasons, including the last two as associate head coach ... Methodist hired Heather Stafford as head women's coach. The program is slated to begin competition in the fall of 2001. Stafford has been a lacrosse coach with the English Lacrosse Association.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Dartmouth named Kate Graw as a women's assistant coach ... Aimee Seward was chosen as women's assistant lacrosse and field hockey coach at Gettysburg.

Men's soccer assistants -- Mississippi named Louis Richard as an assistant ... Darren Nowaczyk was added as an assistant at Saint Joseph's (Indiana).

Sandra Brindamour was hired as head swimming coach and aquatics director. Brindamour has been an assistant women's coach and assistant aquatics director at Wagner for two seasons ... Ashland awarded head men's and women's coaching duties to Paul Graham. Since 1995, Graham has served as an assistant coach at Wright State.

Men's and women's track and field -- Tyler Sisco resigned as head track coach and football offensive coordinator at Manchester to become head football and assistant boys' track and field coach at Glenwood (Iowa) High School. Manchester chose Jeremy Markham as Sisco's successor ... Curtis Frye, head coach at South Carolina, agreed to terms on a five-year contract ... Norm Ogilvie was elevated to head coach at Duke ... Illinois State selected Jeff Pigg as head men's and women's track and field and cross country coach.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Tennessee added Rodney Rothoff as assistant women's coach, succeeding interim assistant Doug Molnar ... Kebba Tolbert accepted duties as an assistant coach at Syracuse. Tolbert has been associate women's coach at McKendree College in Lebanon, Illinois, for two years ... South Alabama added Brad Bowman and Chris Baptista as assistants.

Men's and women's water polo assistant -- Hartwick named Janell Odom as women's assistant coach.

Wrestling -- Steve Kimpel was hired as head coach and strength and conditioning coordinator at Wabash ... Lou Montano resigned as head coach at Columbia.

Wrestling -- Brad Penrith was promoted to head coach at Northern Iowa after serving as top assistant coach for the past three seasons. Penrith replaces Mark Manning, who resigned.

Wrestling assistants -- Cornell added Steve Garland as an assistant coach. Garland, a 2000 graduate of Virginia with a bachelor's degree in psychology, was the 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference wrestler of the year ... Terry Brands and Steve Hamilton were added as assistants at Nebraska ... John Dattalo was chosen as an assistant at Syracuse. Dattalo has been an assistant at Anderson (South Carolina) ... Citadel chose Jeff Ragan as an assistant coach.

STAFF

Athletic trainer -- Chris Hildebrandt was awarded duties as athletic trainer at Lehman.

Athletic training assistants -- Lisa Stalans was selected as women's assistant athletic trainer at Texas. Stalans, who succeeds Jenny Posey, was assistant athletic trainer at Tusculum ... Bryn Mawr awarded assistant athletic trainer responsibilities to Kimberly Winslow. From 1997 to 2000, Winslow served as head athletic trainer and high-school student athletic trainer advisor with the State College Area School District.

Compliance -- Vanderbilt named Jim Booz as director of compliance ... Midwestern State named Brad Barnes as director of compliance to succeed Heath Senour.

Compliance assistant -- Benjy Wilber, former assistant director of compliance at Utah, was named to a similar post at Wisconsin.

Development -- Miami (Florida) hired Blake James as director of athletics development.

Equipment manager -- Timothy Fisher was selected as athletics equipment manager at Manhattanville. For the past five years, Fisher has been assistant supervisor of facilities/equipment room at Dutchess Community College.

Facilities -- San Diego hired Carl Reed as director of the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Reed has been assistant sports events manager at California for the past two years.

Facilities assistant -- Joel Morgan accepted the position of assistant athletics facilities director at San Diego. For the past two seasons, Morgan has served as a graduate assistant for event management at Gonzaga.

Marketing -- Minnesota added Natasha Freimark as director of marketing and corporate sponsorships for women's athletics ... Northern Colorado added Beth Gregory as marketing and promotions assistant. Gregory has spent the past two years as a graduate assistant in the sports marketing department at Providence.

Marketing assistant -- Steve Ekhoff was appointed assistant director of marketing at DePaul.

Media relations assistant -- Colin McDonough was selected as athletics media relations assistant at Northern Colorado. Most recently, McDonough has been interim assistant director of athletics communications at Akron.

Recruiting coordinator -- Kim Schrader was appointed as recruiting coordinator and assistant to the athletics director at Knox.

Sports information -- Rick Schaeffer, sports information director at Arkansas, resigned to become northwest Arkansas regional director of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes ... Gregg Matalas accepted duties as sports information director at Lebanon Valley.

Sports information assistants -- Jeff Duggan accepted duties as sports information director at Regis ... Florida hired Greg Hotchkiss as assistant sports information director and chose Matthew Ciciarelli as sports information coordinator.

Sports medicine -- Wesleyan (Connecticut) hired Joe Fountain as director of athletics injury care. For the past nine years, Fountain has been head athletic trainer at Trinity (Connecticut).

Strength and conditioning -- Scott Kellar accepted the position of head strength and conditioning coach at Bowling Green, succeeding Mike Ward. Kellar was head strength and conditioning, head men's and women's track and field and assistant football coach at College of DuPage.

Ticketing services -- Missouri-Kansas City hired Terry Drake as director of tickets and events operations. Drake most recently has been an account executive for the Kansas City Attack professional indoor soccer organization.

CONFERENCES

The City University of New York Athletic Conference elected Bruce Filosa as president and Robert J. Coleman as vice-president for the 2000-01 and 2001-02 academic years.

Thomas Reuschling was elected as president of the Sunshine State Conference for the 2000-01 school year. Reuschling is president at Florida Southern.

The Mountain West Conference chose Ron Christian as assistant director of communications. For the past three years, Christian has fulfilled responsibilities as sports information director at Bemidji State.

Julie Reuvers assumed the post of assistant public relations director at the Pacific-10 Conference. Reuvers has spent the last three years at Arizona State in the areas of media relations and marketing.

The Pacific-10 Conference announced the selection of the following individuals as officers for 2000-01: Richard L. McCormick, president at Washington, chair of the chief executive officers group; Kenneth L. Casavant, faculty athletics representative at Washington State, president; William H. Moos, athletics director at Oregon, vice-president; and Christine A. Dawson, associate athletics director at California, vice-president.

The Heartland Conference selected Peyton Low as sports information director.

ASSOCIATIONS

The American Volleyball Coaches Association hired Maggie Mohrfeld as assistant membership director. Mohrfeld has spent the last two years as an assistant coach at Missouri-Kansas City.

NOTABLES

Oklahoma head softball coach Patty Gasso, assistants Melyssa Panzer and Tim Walton and graduate assistant Jennifer Jaime were selected as the Speedline/NFCA Division I national coaching staff of the year for 2000. Gasso, Panzer, Walton and Jaime led the squad to the 2000 Women's College World Series championship and closed the season with a 66-8 mark.

DEATHS

Former Grambling women's basketball player Mary Currie died of Lou Gehrig's disease June 25. Currie, 34, played at Grambling from 1983 to 1987 and closed her collegiate career as the school's leading career scorer with 2,256 points.

Larry Kelley, former Yale football player and the second winner of the Heisman Trophy, died recently. Kelley, 85, was a three-sport athlete at Yale, competing in football, baseball and basketball. He earned the Heisman in 1936 and was elected to the National Football Hall of Fame in 1969.

Hana Pochobradska, former all-America skier at Colorado, died from complications with brain cancer. She was 28. Pochobradska earned first-team all-America recognition in 1991, 1993 and 1994.
